It’s amazing they don’t add a CO2 mask to the process. Use the Pentobarbital to knock them out then apply a breathing mask and move from normal air to an increasing level of CO2 until they’re done.
Cheap and dependable.

UPDATE on Christa Pike because there is an important distinction here:
WVLT is reporting that, according to Pike’s assistant federal defender Luke Ihnen, Christa remained alive after Tennessee administered the lethal-injection drugs, and her legal team was filing another emergency motion to stay the execution.
At this point, I have NOT seen the actual new filing, so I’m not going to speculate about its specific legal grounds beyond what has been confirmed: her attorneys are again asking a court to stop the execution.
But another important point: Christa still being alive after the initial administration does not automatically mean the lethal injection “didn’t work” or that the execution was botched.
Tennessee’s execution procedure actually accounts for this possibility.
After the lethal-injection syringes are administered, there is a waiting period. The witness-room blinds are then closed and a physician checks the inmate for signs of life.
If the inmate is still alive, Tennessee’s procedure calls for the blinds to reopen and the injections to be repeated.
So, depending on exactly where we are in that process, “Christa is still alive after receiving the lethal injection” could mean the state has reached a step already contemplated by its protocol — not necessarily that something went wrong.
What makes tonight unusual is everything happening around it: the morning stay, the Supreme Court later lifting that stay, Tennessee proceeding hours after the original execution time, and now another emergency court filing while this process is apparently underway.
We still need the official timeline from TDOC and, importantly, the seven media witnesses inside Riverbend before we can say whether there was an actual complication with the execution.
For now:
• The lethal-injection process reportedly began.
• Pike was reportedly still alive afterward.
• Her attorneys are seeking another emergency stay.
• Tennessee’s written procedure provides for additional injections if the first administration does not result in death.
• We do NOT yet have enough information to accurately call this a failed or botched execution.

Just a reminder that not only did Christa Pike torture and murder Colleen Slemmer, while she was in prison in 2001 she attacked fellow inmate Patricia Jones with a shoestring during a fire evacuation, choked her unconscious, and kept choking even after officers intervened. She was convicted of attempted first-degree murder and got another 25 years. On a recorded call to her mother afterward she said she'd "premeditated the hell out of this" and that 30 more seconds would have finished it.

BREAKING UPDATE: Tennessee’s attempt to execute Christa Pike tonight has ended without her execution being completed.
According to Pike’s federal defense team, the state administered two syringes of pentobarbital during the lethal-injection process, but Pike remained alive afterward.
Important clarification: “two syringes” does NOT necessarily mean two complete rounds of Tennessee’s execution protocol. The two pentobarbital syringes are part of the state’s primary lethal-injection sequence.
Her attorneys subsequently filed another emergency motion seeking to stop the execution, alleging that Pike had not lost consciousness and remained alive after the drug was administered.
Now we are also getting firsthand accounts from the official media witnesses inside Riverbend.
According to WBIR, witnesses said Pike was still alive and breathing when officials instructed them to leave the witness area at 8:53 p.m. Central. One witness described the process as seeming “very out of sorts” from the beginning.
Another particularly striking detail from the witness account: after the injections had already been administered, Pike reportedly asked her chaplain whether they had injected her yet.
That does not, by itself, tell us medically what was happening or why the execution failed — but it is an important firsthand detail in reconstructing the timeline of what occurred inside the chamber.
The execution attempt has now ended.
Pike remains alive.
Tennessee did not successfully carry out the death sentence tonight.
Her current execution warrant expires at midnight Central Time. If it expires without the execution being completed, another execution date would have to be set before Tennessee could attempt this again.
There are now major unanswered questions about the drug administration, Pike’s response, the timing of the procedure and why officials ultimately stopped the execution.
I’m waiting for TDOC’s full explanation and additional witness accounts before stating exactly what failed.

ANOTHER UPDATE from Riverbend following Tennessee’s unsuccessful attempt to execute Christa Pike tonight:
There are now reports from outside the prison that an ambulance left Riverbend under emergency conditions, accompanied by Tennessee Department of Correction vehicles.
I want to be precise here because the details are still developing: it has not yet been officially confirmed that Christa Pike was the person inside that ambulance.
But the timing is significant.
Official media witnesses had just reported that Pike was still alive and breathing when they were instructed to leave the witness area at approximately 8:53 p.m. Central.
Her attorneys had also reported that the state administered the two pentobarbital syringes used in Tennessee’s primary lethal-injection sequence and that Pike remained alive afterward.
Then, following the unsuccessful execution attempt, an ambulance was reportedly seen leaving Riverbend with emergency lights activated and TDOC vehicles accompanying it.
Some people are describing that ambulance as “running code.”
That phrase can mean slightly different things depending on the agency, but in this context it generally refers to an emergency response or transport using lights and sirens. It does NOT automatically mean the patient was in cardiac arrest or that CPR was underway.
However, if Pike is confirmed to have been the person inside that ambulance, an emergency transport would strongly indicate that she was being treated as a living patient in need of urgent medical care — or that medical personnel were actively attempting to stabilize/resuscitate her.
That would also fit with what the media witnesses reported immediately beforehand: they left the execution area while Pike was still alive.
The fact that TDOC vehicles reportedly accompanied the ambulance would also be consistent with the security that would be expected if a state prisoner were being transported, although that alone is NOT confirmation that Pike was inside.
So right now:
Christa Pike’s execution was not completed.
She was alive when the media witnesses were removed.
An ambulance subsequently left Riverbend under emergency conditions with TDOC vehicles reportedly accompanying it.
But we still need official confirmation of who was transported, where they were taken and Pike’s current medical condition.
I’m not going to call the ambulance Pike’s until TDOC, the hospital, her attorneys or a credible witness confirms it — but this is absolutely a significant part of tonight’s developing timeline.

UPDATE: We now have confirmation through court filings that Christa Pike was transported to a hospital following Tennessee’s unsuccessful execution attempt and is receiving medical care.
What we still do NOT have is her current condition, exactly what treatment was required, or confirmation of which hospital she was taken to.
The timeline at this point:
Execution drugs administered ? Pike remained alive ? her attorneys sought emergency intervention and lifesaving measures ? the execution attempt ended ? Pike was transported from Riverbend for medical treatment.
And I’ve seen a lot of people asking the obvious question:
Why would Tennessee be required to save her life when the state had just been trying to execute her?
Because once the execution attempt was stopped and Pike remained alive, she was still a living prisoner in state custody — and the state’s legal obligations toward a prisoner with a serious medical emergency apply.
The U.S. Supreme Court has long held that prison officials cannot be deliberately indifferent to a prisoner’s serious medical needs. Someone in state custody cannot obtain medical treatment for themselves; the state therefore has a constitutional responsibility to provide necessary care.
That does NOT mean doctors are legally required to guarantee that a prisoner survives or continue medically futile treatment indefinitely.
It means that once officials were no longer carrying out the execution, they could not simply leave her untreated and allow the previously administered pentobarbital to kill her. Her attorneys specifically demanded lifesaving medical measures while she remained alive.
As for where she is:
I do have a suspicion, but this remains my inference — NOT confirmed reporting.
My first place to look would be Nashville General Hospital.
Nashville General has a documented existing relationship involving medical care for Tennessee Department of Correction patients, it is relatively close to Riverbend, and it has the emergency and critical-care resources necessary for this type of situation.
That does NOT establish that Pike is there. Vanderbilt or another Nashville-area hospital remains entirely possible, and no reliable source has publicly identified her hospital yet.
For now, what we know is this:
Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s execution attempt, the attempt was terminated, and she was subsequently transported for medical care while still a prisoner in TDOC custody.
Now we wait for her condition, hospital location, and an explanation of exactly what went wrong inside Riverbend.

I guess if she comes out of this with severe brain damage and is a total retard, I might be OK with a life sentence.
