I liked the hire, but after the interview, I know without a doubt that Les hired the right guy.

Maturity. Experience. Straight Shooter. Family Guy. Excited.

He is not an arrogant know-it-all, but you know what, with all the coaches he has been around in college and the NFL, this guy knows what it takes to win.

Finally, unfortunately for him, he tasted the bitterness of adversity at Louisville, but this has made him all the more wiser and appreciative of where he is at today.

I think we scored a home run with this guy. Man, he definitely sounds like an SEC Coach, that's for sure.

Can't wait for 2011.

I'm saying this a bit tongue-in-cheek, but did anyone else come away from this interview thinking "This guy should be our head coach!"

Naw, I love Les.... but this Kragthorpe interview got me really fired up. He certainly says all the right things and is very, very well-spoken and clear on what he wants to accomplish IMO.

Exciting times on the offensive side of the ball, no doubt.

No way. Do you realize how many great lines we would lose if Les were to quit giving pressers?

The entire media world would cry.

Your short side option may it RIP.

while I'm ecstatic that Crowton is gone, and pleased with this hire...the short side option is a valid play call, in general. The continued referencing of frustration with it only shows rapid onset of acute rantardation.

this. do rantards genuinely think that the option is only ever run to the wide side of the field? Serious question.

My favorite part:
"In that game I called 22 straight runs. But they were 3 touchdown drives. Bottom line is to score points. I've been in games too where I've thrown it 20 straight times. It depends on what the defense is doing to try and stop you."

true option teams kill on the short side. the "option" should have never been called with JJ, short side or wide side is irrelevant. most of the great option play callers make their living on the short side...bitching about "the short side option" only shows ignorance

the guy is impressive. if you listen to him, you know he knows football. you can see why he was considered one of the top young coaches when he was at tulsa.

highly impressed with this guy.

Too me, option is all about spacing. Running it to the short side kills just about any chance of a big gain off the pitch. The RB automatically has to slow down while a QB can full out sprint. That throws off timing and spacing.

running to the wide side also stretches the field, and allows a natural cut back lane in the middle of the defense

short side has a 12th defender. AKA, the sideline. Doesnt allow that cut back to the middle

I have a hard time buying that option tams make their living on the short side. Then again ive never coached it, nor have i ever noticed it in all my years of watching football. That is just my opinion on it.

Nobody is suggesting that the short side option isn't a legitimate play. What isn't legit is to have a tendency to run it to the short side 98% of the time. It also isn't legit to run it with personnel that have proven to not be skilled at running the option, ie JJ. If you are going to run the option it is wise to have a more balanced approach and also include some option passes from time to time.

It isn't complaining just because it was to the short side. It was complaining because outside of Keiland vs Virginia Tech it seemed to almost never work.

I see your point, but many people fail to realize that despite the appearance of "more space" on the wideside of the field, oftentimes there is at least one (sometimes even two or three) extra defenders on the wide side of the field. So even though there's more grass, there's also more people covering that grass ... 3 guys covering 30 yards of grass is actually tougher to run on than one guy covering 10 yards of grass.... One of the basic premises of football is to go where they're not, or more precisely go where you have a numbers advantage, and 2 blocking 4 is not an advantage wheras 2 blocking 1 is certainly an advantage.

All that said, we didn't run the option this year to score points per se with big gainers and TDs as crazy as that may sound. We ran the option to stretch the defense horizontally and open up the inside run game and short pass game.
