What causes a coach to gain legendary status. If Joe Pa coaches 40 years and only wins 2 national championships. where will history place Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Nick Saban?

You build it when he retires. Look at Alabama...what if Saban laid an egg (aka Sandusky)? What do you do with the statue then?

Actually, "Miles Field at Tiger Stadium" sounds much better.

Nah, name a street after him like they did for Skip. That is enough to show respect and give him a kind of immortality. West Stadium Drive=Les Miles Drive, or something like that, if he wins another championship.

Good rule of thumb is to never name buildings after live people or set up statues to honor live people.

Reason: Jo Pa has a statue at PSU right now. They are going to have to pay someone to melt it down.

After he retires.

Something tells me there aren't going to be many statues of head coaches bei g built anywhere anytime soon.

Sticky situation.

Paul Dietzel did as much for LSU as Nick Saban. Do we build one of Dietzel? We wouldn't if I had anything to say about it.

Charlie McClendon loved LSU but never won a National Championship. Should be build one of Mac? Not just yes, but hell yes.

Saban returned us to glory and then flushed us down the toilet. Should we build one of Saban? Not just no, but hell no.

So back to the original question: Should we build a statue of Miles? I think that would be fine sometime in the future, but first let's wait and see what the future holds.

Not unless he wins a couple more crystal footballs and it should be after he retires. Why? Because to many things can happen if we make one before he leaves the program. For example Joe Pa. Im not saying something that extreme, but Theirs to many things that could happen. I could see a statue being revealed while Les is announcing his retirement 10 years from now though.

I'm only for building a statue provided the following two conditions are met:
1) CLM brings home another crystal ball
2) The statue features CLM hoisting a crystal ball in each hand over the head and looming over a much smaller CNS statue. Symbolic on an adolescent level (two balls/lesticles) and because Miles legend here will shadow CNS's for good.

Only about 5% serious

We do not put our players' names on their jerseys. They play for LSU, not for the name on the back of their jerseys, and I think they embrace that idea of team versus individual. Judging from how Les Miles speaks about the team, I think he views the program in the same light.

We love Les Miles and what he's done the same way we love Charlie Mac and what he did, but no one member of the program is bigger than the program, and that's where our success comes from.

After he is no longer our coach, there will be great coaches after him.

None of them need statues. They will be forever remembered by the Tiger faithful for what they did for our program.

Yeah, I got caught up in my train of thought and crossed what I wish was on the jerseys with what's actually on them. It was a good train up until then, though! Too bad it was the first goddamned thing I said. I refuse to edit that post, though. It stands, warts and all.

I think an award or scholarship will honor a person more than a statue.

How about this- every year the top 3 players on Offense , Defense and Special Teams as well as one Overall player will be awarded the Les Miles scholarship.

It could be within the scope of the 85 but it will still honor the players who are chosen for it each year.

This way it is not subject to Campus building changes, laying of new roads, changing fields, rebuilding stadium etc...

Scholarships and honors just go on for ever.
