LSU,according to ESPN's efficiency ratings, has the...

3rd most efficient offense in the SEC
28th most efficient offense in the country (last year was 18th)

9th most efficient defense in the SEC
57th most efficient defense in the country

LSU's...

offensive passing efficiency rating is #39 in the country
defensive passing efficiency rating is #25 in the country

yards per rush FOR is 45th in the nation (4.8 YPC)
yards per rush FOR is 6th in the SEC.

yards per rush AGAINST is 70th in the nation (3.99 YPC)
yards per rush AGAINST is 8th in the SEC.

OVERALL,

The offense is outperforming the defense. The secondary is doing a decent job.

Offensive Pass efficiency:

#39 LSU- 147.17
#81 Texas- 129.00
#103 Florida St- 117.26

Rushing yards per carry:

#45 LSU 4.8
#78 Texas 4.0
#118 Florida St. 3.1

2016 ESPN offensive efficiency:

#18 LSU 73.2
#83 Florida St 80.8
#66 Texas 48.4

2017 ESPN offensive efficiency:

#28 LSU 70.0--- DOWN 3.2 vs. 2016
#83 Florida St 41.9--- DOWN 38.8 vs. 2016
#92 Texas 39.1--- DOWN 9.3 vs. 2016

2017 ESPN defensive efficiency:

#8 Texas 85.7
#11 Florida St. 81.8
#57 LSU 54.4

Florida St. and Texas have been worse on offense than LSU this year. It's Herman's first year, but Fisher has been coach long enough to take full responsibility for the drop off.

However, Herman's Texas has a WORSE efficiency rating than the 2016 Texas Longhorns so far.

Both Texas and FSU have top 11 defenses but are 2-2 and 1-2.

LSU's defense has been a bigger problem than the offense. LSU's offense has had a lower dropoff than Texas or FSU's offenses.

LSU has played 3 bad football teams and one average to below average team so far. Texas and FSU have both played top 5 teams

From ESPN:

Team efficiencies are based on the point contributions of each unit to the team's scoring margin, on a per-play basis. The values are adjusted for strength of schedule and down-weighted for "garbage time" (based on win probability). The scale goes from 0 to 100; higher numbers are better and the average is roughly 50 for all categories. Efficiencies update daily during the season.

What is your point?

Narrative: Orgeron and Canada sucks, Aranda is awesome.

Stats: Defense is equally or more so the problem

Narrative: Orgeron is already a lost cause. Fisher or Herman would be 4-0.

Stats: Fisher and Herman are coaching two 2-loss teams with Top 11 defenses. The offenses are a mess and both performing worse than last year so far. Perhaps there is more to winning football games than coaches.

Alabama, I somewhat feel, is a tougher opponent than Troy, Syracuse, and Miss State.

That was a well thought out and informative thread/post. I applaud your effort and energy gathering these FACTS. Now, after having said that I will use your data to predict the next 3 games outcomes

UF - 28
LSU - 10

Auburn - 41
LSU - 3

Ole Miss - 14
LSU - 13

Alabama - 82
LSU - 0*

*indicates the team quit. They sent a representative out at halftime to forfeit the game. The score is posted from halftime as the final game score.

Those stats don't mean a damn thing when LSU hasn't played any high quality opponents yet. Their non-conference schedule this year was one of the softest I can ever remember, and the only SEC team they've played has gotten blown out by 28 and 39 in back to back games since they dominated LSU. Show me these same stats in a few weeks after LSU has played a little bit tougher opposition.
