You’ve got to separate the situation from the actual execution of the play.
Dickinson can hit. The coaches know he can hit. Let’s see if he can get a bunt down. The number of outs makes no difference, this is an intrasquad scrimmage.

They know he can bunt too…. In the words of Ron burgundy “when in Rome”

The inverse is true, the coaches KNOW Dickinson can bunt, but he hasn’t been hitting well. Far more beneficial to let him hit there.

Arrambide struck out swinging. Hernandez dropped it picks it up and runs down Arrambide. 1 outs. Costello up

My guess is this is pretty close to the reason why. Maybe just to see if everyone's on their toes.
