The OSU defense was horrible last year too.
They were 26th in S&P+ for 2018, which means statistically LSU's offense would have performed very poorly against them.

Sounds like he may want to adjust his inputs.
They gave up 26 ppg.
BTW: Georgia was ranked 8th in S&P, LSU put up 475 yards against them.

Looking at the adjusted S&P+ ranking for LSU, particularly for passing, are you under the impression that this was encompassing?
It’s not only adjusted for opponent, it’s done in a way that takes into account the strength of their opponents as well.

Overall defensive squads were terrible.
Are you under the impression this comment is encompassing, or that averaging the defensive rankings somehow is? His methodology is so much more advanced you can’t even comprehend how simplistic your approach is.

Roger is in here suggesting that S&P+ adjust their inputs because he doesn't like the results.

cool, thanks for proving to everyone that S&P reflects an entire season's worth of data, and not just 8% of it.

You should let him know since you’re on the cusp of the most accurate statistical analysis of football we’ve ever seen.

yes, a large chunk of the defenses that LSU faced in 2016 and 2017 were in fact terrible.

But did they factor in that Haskins and Day would go full-retard and blow their playoff slot by desperately seeking Heisman stats in the Purdue game?
color me shocked. another O-tard who doesn't understand S&P.

Here is a link to an explanation of S&P+ for anyone who really is interested in learning about the metrics. This article is a couple years old and I believe he has made some slight adjustments since then.
It’s clearly not as in depth as sorting stat columns on the NCAA’s website, but maybe one day Bill will learn to think outside the box a little, do some actual research, and possibly get up to the same speed as the wizards in our fan base.

If he fails to win the West or make the playoffs in the next two seasons, he will take care of that himself.

quote:BS! I understand it perfectly... Some dudes force feed oodles & oodles of football stats into a black box and come up with predictions that are the teeniest bit better than a coin-flip.

Then they sell this crap to corporate media pinheads, and everybody lives happily ever after!

It's a conspiracy!!!!

He recently changed his formula. He'll keep updating and make it better.
quote:
My new S&P+ formula more heavily weights recent history/priors by keeping preseason projections included in the projections for the full season. And the conference-level adjustments I added had the effect of slapping down the ratings of most teams from mid-major conferences while propping up a lot of P5s.

No.
2015 averaged 440 yrs of O per game. 2018 averaged 402 yrs per game.

Conspiracy? Nah. Most ball coaches would call S+P, "noise".

yep. S&P is meant to be predictive but is very slightly more accurate than a coin toss.
But the entire process is still a work in progress.
