As a Saints fan the biggest steal that comes to mind would be Marques Colston. 7th round pick out of Hofstra, nearly 10,000 yards and 70 plus TDs. Thats some pretty damn good value for a 7th round pick.

Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Jeff Saturday, London Fletcher, Priest Holmes, Rod Smith, Adam Vinatieri, Arian Foster, Wes Welker, James harrison, Antonio Gates, John Randle, Warren Moon, and Dick Lane were all UDFA

News flash: Cowboys are not the only team in the NFL with injuries.

See the Texans. Andre Johnson leaves, Arian Foster played 4 games this year, and they've started 4 different quarterbacks. Cry me a river Dallas. AND they got a free first round draft pick.

Still baffles me why the dumbass Saints didn't take a shot at him in the seventh round, call his bluff. I bet you he would a played and you would've stolen him.

No he wouldn't have.

And the good thing for Lael is that he's able to renegotiate his deal after next year. He can get his big $$$ contract after year 2 while other rookies will be 4 year deals and 1st round picks will have a 5th year team option on their contracts as well.

So he's gonna get his big contract 2 or even 3 years before the other rookies do. Not that bad of a plan if you ask me.

Shouldn't be a surprise that a majority of the thread has no friggin clue.

There are two theories:

1. La'ell let it be known that he would not sign if drafted on the first day so he could pick his team

2. The NFL put out a notice to 32 teams saying not to draft him because of the pending legal situation

But yeah Bellichek, Ozzie Newsome and the OL needy Saints didn't feel like he was worth a 7th round flyer. :The RANT strikes again

It should be classified as a frick up by all 30 teams for not even throwing a 7th round selection at him

Supposedly his agent told all 30 teams that if they tried that then Collins would not sign a deal at all.

Gotta agree here... AND if they would have kept Murray they would be a HEAVY favorite to win it all. And probably would....

It leaked that if Lael wasn't taken in Round 3, he wouldn't sign if he was drafted in rounds 4-7 and would re-enter the draft the next year. However, the only way you can re-enter the next draft is if you are drafted and not signed. If you aren't drafted, you aren't eligible to re-enter the next draft because you are considered to be an NFL free agent and get to pick your team.

So if Collins was drafted after Day 2, he could have refused to sign and enter the 2016 draft. But that didn't happen and someone gave Lael bad information on that because if he knew the rule, I doubt he would have came out and said that he wouldn't sign and would try to re-enter the draft. If his reps wouldn't have said that, someone probably would have taken him later in the draft, he would have refused to sign, and could re-enter the draft.

But, like I previously posted in here, Lael has a big contract advantage than other rookies do. He's eligible to sign his 2nd contract after year 2, next season. So he gets his big $$$ contract after next season, while other rookies have 4 year deals, 1st round picks with a 5th year team option, and can't get new deals til after year 3 at the earliest.

Collins signed a 3year, $1.59m contract that is fully guaranteed. So he's getting $1.59m for 2 years, then will get his 2nd contract after next year. And the 2nd contract is where the big $$$ is at in the NFL now anyways with the rookie wage scale and what not.

Sure he lost a lot of $$$, but if he performs well enough he will be able to make that up over time.

[quote]The Saints could have had him basically for free (7th round) and they blew it. [/quote

boneheaded moves like this are exactly why I could care less about the saints anymore. How in the hell does the local team not spend a draft pick, even a 3rd rounder, on a player like this. A big position of need for next to nothing slip right through their fingers.

And waste a pick.

There are plenty of late round draft picks who wind up catching on, better to go that route.

Bear in mind that if he had been drafted that late Collins had no obligation to sign for late round money.
