don’t know why players don’t take more advantage of this rule. 4th down and short coming up? Rip the star players helmet off the play before so he doesn’t get to run the ball up the middle.

Yeah that would be a penalty and an automatic first down

Don't think you thought that one out too well

Several years ago players were letting their hair get out of control such that helmets came off regularly.

Please explain how "out of control hair" causes one's helmet to come off? Thanks.

My belief is tha the player who loses his helmet AND the player who knocks it off should sit out a play. If anyone is more guilty of an egregious foul it should be the player who knocks off another player's helmet. Should be an automatic targeting and unsportsmanlike conduct foul resulting in an immediate ejection of the player who knocked off the helmet. (Take THAT, you bogus NCAA and SEC ref's!)

Correct ! If the helmet is removed as a result of a face mask the player does not have to leave the game. This happened in an LSU game recently.

The rule was implemented to discourage players from deliberately removing their helmet after a TD or Sack etc. There was a period years back when that was a thing and players wanted to take off their helmet so everyone could see their face.
