That has to be the dumbest rule in college football. It accomplishes exactly dick! Furthermore, it can have a huge impact on the game depending upon when it occurs and who the player is....
Ok, I feel better!

Player safety. They want to make sure the player securely puts the helmet back on instead of rushing it
It’s stupid

Several years ago players were letting their hair get out of control such that helmets came off regularly. Seeing it as a potential safety issue they implemented this to encourage players to keep their helmets securely fastened

No, they did it to make sure players put their helmet on securely in the first place, vs being very loose and not giving as good of protection. I also am not a big fan of the rule tho

Helmets should be optional. Our fullback wouldn't wear one for sure...

I don’t know why players don’t take more advantage of this rule. 4th down and short coming up? Rip the star players helmet off the play before so he doesn’t get to run the ball up the middle.

It’s like how many steps do they think it takes to do this? Lol
Step number 1: put on helmet

If the helmet comes off bc of a penalty caused by the other team the player doesn’t have to sit. Same rule in high school.

That would be a penalty, and the player gets to stay in the game anyway.

They only sit out a play if they deliberately remove their helmet. They do not have to sit out if their helmet is removed as a result of a face mask. This rule was put in place to discourage players from celebrating a big play by removing their helmet so the world can see their face.

That's incorrect. If the player's helmet comes off as a result of any reason other than a penalty, the guy has to sit for a play.....

No, that's a different thing, which would result in an unsportsmanlike penalty.

That’s two different rules. Originally NFL outlawed the “Emmitt Smith” celebration of taking off of helmet after big plays by calling unsportsmanlike conduct.
Sitting after a player’s helmet comes off was instituted as a player safety thing. If you remember Warren Sapp and others used to have their helmets come off regularly because it was not on correctly (there was a famous sack of Brett Farve) and these players making plays sans-headgear got a lot of press.
Like most things in NFL and college it began trickling into the high school game and younger leagues.
The current rule in pro / college are more along the lines of “setting the example.”
On the record as hating the rule. Could easily be fixed with a warning (firsr time) followed by yardage.

I never understood this, either. Seems silly.....

Well, it’s supposed to be a penalty. A couple of times I’ve seen an LSU player’s helmet ripped off without a penalty and he had to sit out a play.
