Some interesting Sam Leavitt analytics

1) His completion percentage is listed as 61.3% for this year thus far; however, his adjusted completion percentage (completions + drops / on target passes) is 76.1%
2) On target passes dropped by the receiver is 10 so far this year (14.9% drop rate). That statistic for him in 2025 & 2024 was 11 & 20 respectively (understanding he did miss games last year).
Points 1 & 2 above is a combination of 2 issue in my opinion. The first being, our receivers aren't getting separation and aren't making the super tough catches that are "not great passes, but should still be caught". The second being, Leavitt's passes that are "catchable" could easily be fixed by improving accuracy ever so slightly. He seems off by inches on some of these throws (see missed TD pass at the end of the game last night, see the first interception in the Clemson game, etc...)
3) Batted passes at the LOS so far this year is 4. He had 5 & 4 total for the 2025 & 2024 seasons respectively.
Lane and this staff have to figure out how to remedy this. It's happening way too often and will (and potentially has already) cost us down the road.
4) He's been sacked 8 times this year. He was sacked 20 & 19 times for 2025 & 2024 respectively.
5) His time to throw (3.04) is on par with both seasons at Arizona State.
6) He has 16 non-designed scrambles. He had 28 & 51 for 2025 & 2024 respectively
I know the offensive line can play better, but it seems he is the common denominator in his sack/scramble issues.
And for what it's worth, his time to throw was rated at 3.35 versus Ole Miss. For reference it was 2.82 and 2.97 against Clemson and Tech respectively.
Please also keep in mind, the above stats/analysis is against Clemson, Tech and Ole Miss. I expect these numbers to increase tremendously now that we are in SEC play.
Leavitt MUST improve or the negative stats will far exceed anything he saw at ASU. Our receivers need to improve to assist in this as well. If they don't, I don't see how we make the playoffs, let alone make a run.

Agree. Leavitt is the problem.
Yes, Baker’s D was soft in 1H. But, Chambliss was always going to get his.
However, the offense significantly underperformed. Lane’s offenses usually avg 500 yds per game. And offense last night put up like 330 yds.
And, we know Charlie Weiss Jr is a fantastic offensive mind. His multi-year track record proves that he is great. But, he can only work with the tools that he has.
Leavitt panics. He’s like Jayden Daniels as a Jr but with less speed. Hopefully the coaching staff puts on those VR goggles to help slow things down for him.

Leavitt has upside. He needs more time to build composure and confidence. That would show poise in the pocket and improve his decision making. This was in great contrast with TC and IMO the differences we experienced with Burrow and Daniels n their second year.

Actually, no improvement since coming to LSU. Same as his stats at ASU. In fact, it's going to be worse now that we are in SEC play. It's already on par to be worse here, and we've only played 1 team with a pulse.
Receivers also have to start making plays. The "tough" catches are what you get paid NIL to make. If he can improve his throws even just slightly and the receivers can make tougher catches, his completion percentage sky rockets 16%.

CFB is now a pro sport, so LSU’s GM should get a little heat. The fact that we are going to game for and I still don’t know any of the receivers names except for Watkins is telling. LSU signed essentially 10 very average wide receivers. There is no Nabers, BTJ, or even Zavion Thomas on this team. That was evident in game 1 and it still is now. It seems like LSU would have been better off putting big money to 1-2 great WRs vs several mediocre players.
Same at guard. You essentially have what should be a walk-on (Bordelon) starting. Those problems all flow together. When you have a poor interior off offensive line, the quarterback has no confidence. And when you have receivers who cannot get open, the quarterback has even less confidence. That’s not a great combination with a quarterback who himself is already erratic and inconsistent.

It would help if we had a WR1 that he could toss it up to.
We don't have a typical LSU WR1 that can go up and win 50/50 balls so Leavitt needs to be very accurate and he hasn't been so far.

I love how some of you think the portal is a fricking shopping mall where every position is fully stocked at all times and you just have to pick and choose. Where were these mythical sure-fire NFL Draft pick WRs in the portal this year? Harris and Brown were both highly ranked. Watkins was getting time at OM as a freshman and came in knowing the offense.
If you want to quibble over how many the staff let walk and replaced, fine. It’s pretty obvious they should have made keeping Darby committed a priority, but Wright does look like a good one to have retained. But there weren’t hundreds of better choices to rebuild the entire fricking room. That’s just not how it works.

I imagine they saw Green filling that role and he has been. He isn’t a downfield threat that a WR1 would be, though.
It’s going to be tough with him out. I’m hoping Mothershed moves into that role next week and turns heads.

The portal is just what the public sees. Don’t think for one second teams aren’t in constant communication with players who aren’t in the portal trying to get them to transfer. Often times, the portal is the end of the recruitment. Not the beginning.
The way it often works with really good players is the players representation and teams’ GMs’ talking well before the player enters the portal. “Tampering” is the way business is done. Not some unheard of practice.
I suspect the thought process may have been find a good QB, and that will make average wide receivers better. Unfortunately, LSU did not nail number one so that combined with number two is making things very tough.
