And them pitching to Coffey in the top of the 7th with a base open wasn't bright either.

Coffey LITERALLY gets a hit more than half the time. There is no way you let her beat you there.

But again, I'll allow it.

No doubt! I thought for sure they would put her on.

I’m not sure why Torina didn’t argue infield fly rule on that bases loaded pop up to the catcher play in the 3rd. I’d like to hear the explanation there. I know infield fly rule is an umpire judgement call but 99% of the time, that’s called.

Gritty performance to win when you don’t play your best and the umpire is trash

Infield fly is more for when the ball is popped toward one of the infielders nd it is obviously a ROUTINE catch. There was nothing routine about this ball. Bergeron was fighting it the whole way.

If she had been stopped and somewhat settled while waiting for the ball, then you probably get infield fly.

We found the lesbian Karen! (Just kidding). I admittedly don't watch much softball, but from the little I've seen, I'm optimistic about a deep run (deep enough that I start tuning in)

That was an infield fly by definition all day, doesn’t matter if the infield player botched the play that was an ordinary effort play all day long… the home plate umpire blew the call!!

Agree Casual--at least IMHO and probably many others--that should have been an infield fly applicable play. Unfortunately, the Infield Fly Rule dictates that it is in the umpire's judgment if it were an ordinary effort play regardless of if we think his judgment was flawed or not. Similar to the continuing controversial obstruction rule call. Shouldn't matter that they botched the play, but it does matter if the umpire (in his judgment) thinks the play was not a play requiring ordinary effort.

umpire's judgment

This is the problem!

I finally got to watch the game a few minutes ago where the play in question happened and I agree with the sentiment of everyone so far.

What almost got me thrown out on several occasions is when the middle infielder is 30 feet behind the dirt trying to catch a fly ball and it's called an infield fly... their excuse is always, "she didn't have to use much effort to get to the ball." I countered with the fact that she was already positioned in the grass to begin with... the consistency of umpires the past few years is getting non-existent.

There was awesome. On the rare moment that Coffey doesn't get the job done, the next batter picked her up.
