So what's the point of trying to teach "complimentary football"?

Every time I hear a reference to "complimentary football" I want to gag. What's the point of making your objective "complimentary football" when you can't block the guy in front of you? If our coaches are focusing on "complimentary football" they're not focusing our players on the task each one had before him. These players should be locked in on concrete concepts like "DO YOUR JOB" and not on some vague concept like "complimentary football".

Complimentary football is a stupid term.

It’s one of those industry terms people use to sound smart in whatever industry they’re in.

It's another way of saying that you have major weaknesses on a team.

Complimentary football is meant to minimize those weaknesses.

For example, if you have a team with a very bad run defense...getting the lead is critical. If you have an elite defense, staying away from turnovers is critical because you are going to be in every game if you do.

It's an admission of being imperfect. It's not an overall strategy.

Is that when everyone tells you how good of a team you have?

Coach Speak for the team has an issue of doing their assignments. It happened in all aspects of the game not just on offense. Even the defense had a few plays where they had players out of assignment. Which is what led to the big touchdown run.

We just happen to struggle with it more on offense than the typical team has this year which makes it more maddening but every football team has these issues of doing their assignment and not getting out of position.

Complimentary football is a strategy - like running the offense with less tempo to keep the defense off the field longer.

BK references it so much because they didn’t build this into the plan all offseason. It’s only now being recognized that they need to run the ball more and control the clock with this defense. Sloan clearly had them working tempo spread all offseason. Recruiting has contributed to this too - we don’t have a back who can get in there and get a yard.

I wish a reporter would ask him to spell the word he loves....there is a difference between complimentary and complementary football.
I would love to see some 'complimentary' football, where we have a lot to compliment.
Reading this board, it is obvious that many have no idea what he is talking about. I wonder sometimes if he knows what he is saying.
Make him spell the word so everyone knows what he is trying to communicate.
