In part the D has underachived due to over confidence. They apparently think teams will just roll over.

That might explain trying to simply knock them down rather than tackling them, but doesn't explain horrible lapses in coverage and the extremely high number of missed assignments and big plays by the opposition.

I hope so, too, but if Auburn didn't, then why would State?

Auburn did well against us?

they scored 14 offensive points and had 250+ yards passing

in comparison they scored 3 against a shitty moo state and had like 226 yards, total, against UTenn yesterday

I think our defense has been overrated this year and last year. Even healthy and playing at its best, it hasn't been as good as people say it is. Lack of speed at certain positions, particularly linebacker and safety last year, lack of aggressiveness in scheme, particularly this year, and a slew of injuries have caused problems for us.

None of that appears likely to change, although the linebackers are arguably faster this year. We aren't very good on defense, and we just have to accept that, I think, and hope Crowton's offense can outscore our opponents.

Florida - 450 yds total offense
Ole Miss - 325 yds total offense
Who won? Ole Miss was outgained by 125 yds and still won.

Alabama 335
Georgia 325
Who won? Alabama outgained them by 10 yds but the game was never even close.

Every team in the country has question marks. Im sure most teams in the country would gladly take our defense in exchange for theirs even some of the teams in the top 10. We didnt always play great last year and we won the Natl Championship. You compete each game and at the end the only statistic that means anything is the "W".

unless there are 3 teams vying for the #1 and #2 slot for the BCS at the end of the year

With that said, Scott is currently the most important player on the team. Why was he running the ball with 2:30 on the clock and up by 10?

Not that many points...

had 250+ yards passing
with a big % of that coming on one busted play.

I didn't come out of the Auburn game thinking our defense had many issues...

The feeling I had after last night was the feeling I had after the South Carolina game last year...team played flat.

AU has a horrible, horrible offense

as somebody pointed out, that was more than they scored against MSU and UTenn combined

i did

but to be fair, as somebody pointed out, we had a bunch of games where our D didn't live up to the hype last year also

Yup.

And let's give some credit to Lee. He was a shifty little QB. Much more elusive than Stafford, JPW and Tebow.

I don't get your point. Fans of those teams are discussing those question marks just like we are doing. I don't get why discussing such things get some fans in a tizzy.

That may be especially true here since both coordinators still retain their position coach duties.

Fan we cannot defend the pass!

Au and MS have the worst OFF. in the SEC.

they were open all night.

Au had guys open all night to. Sometimes by 20 yards!

Tebow will light us up. Unless we improve Tulane and Ole Miss will light us up, (they are both better passing teams then any one we have played). LSU 5-7

shite UF still mainly relies on their slotbacks running and little drags or 5 yard ins

Look, the defense is great

No, it's not great. It's a stretch even to say it's good at this point.

The defense has been by far the biggest disappointment of the season.

More disturbing is that the problems (other than poor tackling, which only reared its ugly head last night for the first time) appear to be related either to A) a lack of talent, or B) a flawed scheme. If that's the case, we're in trouble on defense for this year because neither of those is the type of thing that changes over the course of a season.

quote:

they just didn't play well in the second half.

They didn't play well in either half...of either of the last two games, arguably three.

quote:

Two observations, their QB had a great second half and that will make any D look sub-par.

Why have both of the SEC quarterbacks we've faced suddenly had these great performances against us, but can't do it against anybody else? If it happens once, maybe it's just a fluke and the QB had a great day, but if it happens consistently, which it has so far and did for much of last year (Casey Dick, Brent Schaeffer, e.g.), it's time to take a hard look at the defense.

quote:

No turner overs hurts a defensive spirit.

Then the defense might want to consider forcing some turnovers to lift its "spirit".

quote:

The D played flat.

Why do we have to keep saying this every week?

Since the first half of the Appy State game, can you really point to even one half of one game where you can say the defense really played outstanding football? How you play consistently determines the base line...poor play like last night is no longer below base line. That's the concern. If we'd played three dominating games defensively, then laid last night's egg, that would be different. But this is a problem that has been there all season so far.

I think LSU has received the benefit of the doubt every time that situation arises and we are in that equation. The BCS worked in our favor in 2003 and 2007. Simply winning games is difficult enough these days. I just like to enjoy the wins not make them miserable by finding every fault we made. Sometimes you dont give your best performance, but you still do enough to win.

14 points is 14 points...not a lot.

Again, if you start making conclusions based on what teams did against other teams, then you will get nowhere.

Upsets happen in college football...see the games yesterday and on Thursday...teams get up to play other teams when you don't think it will happen.

last year we got a ton of style points for beating the living dogshit out of VTech and, like i said, not losing to a horrible team (like USC or OU) or getting blown out (like UGA)
