Hess has not been consistently impressive at all this year. He has his moments, but he is not up to being a Friday night starter. His best role is as a closer. Surely he'll be drafted, but I think that it would be a mistake for him to go forward after such a mediocre season. He should come back next year and shine in a closer role. I doubt that he will stay, though--he'll be another in a long line of college players who go out prematurely and then don't make it at the next level. With another season in a different role he could have much stronger potential in the draft and could make it at the next level.

Some of you put too much stock into the baseball draft being solely about potential. A track record of success will only help and poor performances will only hurt. Plenty of guys have a ton of potential but fall in the draft because of poor performances during their season or in showcases.

Where does he think he is going to get drafted? If he thinks he is going to be a high choice he will be in for a rude awakening. He needs to come back and have a good year but not as the Friday night starter.

Hess will have some leverage either way, but he really has stunk it up this season, so I'd like to see him wait till after next season. Regardless, Hess most likely ain't gonna make it as a starter. He does not have the command. With a fresh arm last season, he was awesome. He could paint the black on both sides.

Absolutely. No one on this team has any business leaving early.
Next year, we have to pray that Walker can return to 2017 form and be the ace and that Hilliard continues developing.
I would love to see Hess back as the closer. It was such a fun feeling having even a one run lead after 7-8, knowing what we were about to set loose on our poor opponents.

So he should come back to be a good reliever, something MLB scouts have already seen him do successfully. And if he comes back to do that he can be a successful pro? But if he leaves this year and starts working on it at a pro level a year earlier, he wont make it?

Back as the closer.
I love your optimism!!
But he is gone. And even if he does come back. It will NOT to be the closer.

This. It’s actually scary how many morons are on this board trying to explain that Hess needs to come back to “put up better numbers because pro clubs don’t draft solely on potential” while the first round is going to be filled with high schoolers who’ve never played against quality competition in their lives.
Hess has proven that he can be dominant as a reliever against better competition than probably any player in the draft on the biggest stage, he’s already shown great stuff, and he’s 21 years old. Anyone who thinks that production means shite for a pitcher is completely clueless. The farm system will judge his production.
Not sure if it’s wishful thinking by people on this site or if they’re all really that clueless about how baseball and the draft works.

The question isn’t is he going to be drafted high enough to leave. ( he absolutely will ). The question is can be better his stock by coming back. If he comes back and shows more feel for his breaking pitch and change up then his 200k signing bonus could jump to the 7 digits. So maybe you should rethink the reasons for staying or declaring.
You don't have a great understanding of baseball if you believe this.
If the majors want him they want him now and will develop him themselves. This is not football where and extra year will improve or make them more money. You sign a minor league contract more times than less. Baseball has a huge developmental league where football has none. For Hess, you might as well get paid to develop under professional coaching.
The only way it could improve his stock is if they thought he could jump directly into the pros after another year in college and it just doesn't happen like that.
