Need better cameras, better production facilities, and announcers who don't like to hear themselves talk all the time. Let the halftime show play instead of doing a bunch of talking. If they are going to do such a production and chage money for it, then do it as an extension of the stadium, and do it right.

I liked it. It was nostalgic. I felt like it was the '80's and I was back at my parents house watching the game on their old Zenith tube TV.

I have not paid for the TigerVision PPV broadcast since Ole Miss '06 - I think. It was terrible then, and has not improved one bit. I watched it at a bar in West Monroe with 3 different tv's broadcasting the same poor picture as all those years ago. There is nothing HD about the broadcast, and I'm fairly certain that those are still the 4x3 cameras that are then stretched on the feed to the 16x9 format to fit the screens that everyone now has making the picture even worse.

Having said that, I caught the ESPN highlights, and there were clearly HD cameras and feeds in the stadium being fed to a satellite somewhere, just not to the PPV systems.

What will it take and cost to get Tiger Vision to sufficiently improve its product?

I don't know what it will cost, but I do know that the cost of upgrading to HD would be enormous. I have family that attends Swaggart's place, and when they made the switch to HD it ended up costing several hundred thousand dollars to get the initial setup going (approx $500K if memory serves).

Obviously that was for a climate controlled environment. I would imagine that the equipment required for a football game would be much more expensive and much more extensive (i.e., multiple cameras posted around the field).

On the other hand, I have a Flip handheld video camera that shoots HD and cost $50.00, so maybe the technology has come down in price. Or maybe Swaggart was telling everyone it cost more than it actually did...

Regardless, I agree that the TigerVision video quality sucks. It stood out as being particularly bad when replayed on ESPN News. They would be running clips of various games, and when they would show some particular play from the No. 2 team in the nation, it looked like they had stepped back 20 years in time.

Given all the money the Sports department just donated to Academics, could they have not kept a little out to make TigerVision not an eye strain hazard? If the production value went up significantly, they might be able to make it more attractive to people who do not buy it now knowing its current quality.

I paid $25 for DirectTv of the Idaho game, and it was horrible, but I expected it to be, and I can afford it, so whatever.

I'm an LSU EE grad and I work designing set-top boxes and chips and such, and I've also been a DirectTV customer for 12 years or so.

DirectTv is compressing the shite out of the signal that they are getting from Tigervision. They do it for all the CFB PPV games (GamePlan). Look around at the other ESPN Gameplan games. They all suck.

There is a knob at DirecTV that they could turn to increase your picture quality, they choose not to. If they cranked up your PPV game, they would have to turn off one of the 20 shopping channels you have available 24/7.

If you've got the time… bitch to them about it. demand a refund for poor quality. Money talks.

I would have to imagine the AD has received plenty of emails and phone calls about this very issue

I wonder if they will comment or even try to make adjustments....like some of y'all said though the only way to make a statement is to choose not to pay for the game

If the department made $$$ on this broadcast, they will assume those who complain are just some small minority when the reality may be something different

If everyone calls the AD office, I'll bet they'll just turn around and find a way to gouge you even more.

Like, Still $25 for a sucky compressed SD feed on local cable or DirectTv.

But for $100 a game, we'll let you login to a high-speed HD bit-torrent directly from our reliable EATEL host computer!

And can RENE just STFU for once! I hate people who need 50 words to express a 5 word thought. The guy thinks he's not doing his job if he leaves a millisecond of empty audio between 2 plays.

Chicken - great thread. My thoughts:

I live out of state (Houston) and have had DirecTV ESPN Gameplan for about 5 years. This year Gameplan was around the same price - about $130 for the season.

As expected, the game was available on Gameplan (channel 788). I recorded it on my DirecTV HD DVR as usual (SOP) and watched it at the same time.

I expect some tldr; comments. OK, that's fair.

Really, really horrific video quality while I watched the game. Not just that, but minimal score/quarter/time/down & distance/time remaining until snap information was posted on the screen. The info post was often late and sometimes put up while the next play was unfolding. WTF. Replays were limited and often shown from only one angle. The "Eye Of The Tiger" and "Louisiana Insurance.." logos appearing going into and out of each replay became annoying after a while.

Once again, terrible video quality in all presentations - even for a SD format live broadcast...

To be fair, none of the other DirecTV ESPN Gameplan channels (788 - 793) have ever had a game broadcast in other than SD. What's up with that, ESPN Gameplan? To remain fair, TigerVision's SD is far worse than any of the other ESPN Gameplan SD broadcasts.

LSU, this needs to change. We are over a decade into the 21st century...

Next, my take on the TigerVision announcers. Wow. I will not use their names since I will try to remain civil in this discussion. I knew I was in for a long night from the audio (play-by-play commentator and the colorless commentator) when the opening kickoff was kicked into the end zone. The kickoff return man took a knee and the colorless commentator said the ball would come out to the 20 yard line. Yes, the 20 yard line. WTF. Even I watched 2 weeks of football prior to this game and knew that the rule change meant taking a knee on the kickoff brings the ball out to the 25 yard line.

Alerted to this, sure enough this same faux pas was repeated by this colorless commentator on the next repeat scenario of the following kickoff. On and on this FUBAR announcing continued. This was national A/V exposure, albeit limited by radio and PPV "opportunities" (ESPN Gameplan, ESPN3, etc.).

Yea, we're definitely not talking quality, knowledgeable announcers on TigerVision. LSU, we can do better than that. #2 ranking this year. Finished #2 last year. #90 (or worse) quality in-house video and commentary. Puhleeze...

My Tigervision experience is getting worse! I mentioned above I recorded the game on ESPN Gameplan channel 788. I've done this in the past. This time, when I replayed the recording on Sunday a big black block of "Do You Want To Purchase This Game For $25 - Yes - No" appeared on the lower third of my screen. I could not see the quarter/time/etc. I could not see the recording time left. When I chose "No", the recording quit. I then "Resumed". I would not choose "Yes", since I had already paid for the game via ESPN Gameplan "out of state". I could not get rid of this recorded big black block out of the lower third of my screen. It was a loop. If I chose "No" it exited the recording. If I chose "Resume" the lower third of the screen would be blocked out (although it improved the overall terrible quality of the recording - ha ha).

Is this DirecTV's fault? ESPN Gameplan's fault? TigerVision's fault? I don't know. I'm just saying the Tigervision experience is getting worse. I have been able to record the terrible quality Tigervision games and watch them "full screen" in the past. Seems like those days are gone.

Sorry to be a negative Nancy, but I'm getting too old to watch partially blocked SD video from the 70's with high school game commentary for what's supposed to be the visual/audio archive of my top tier LSU's football march to the National Championship...

On some national sports clip show they were actually mocking the LSU video quality. It is embarrassing.

Cox Sports is using HD cameras for their coverage of the game, which is broadcast on Sunday nights. I don't see why LSU couldn't use that entire crew and equipment for PPV.

Not the biggest Lynn Rollins fan, but he and Greg Bowser are much better than the PPV crew, and the HD looks great.

Tigervision is well known to have the quality of a 1982 home movie. You folks here who keep ordering it are the problem. Stop buying it and maybe they'll upgrade.
