re: So Joe Alleva is no longer guaranteeing that A&M will be a Saturday Night.

For A&M, the decision to play LSU on Thanksgiving isn't really about tradition, it's about logistics.
Kyle Field has the largest student section in the nation--normally 32,000, but more than that this year due to construction. If A&M is going to play a home game on Thanksgiving weekend, then the game needs to be played on the day that is most conducive to getting students to attend--otherwise, there will be tons of empty student seats (we saw this several times when we played Texas on Black Friday, or in other years where we played someone other than Texas on the Saturday after Thanksgiving).
By playing Thanksgiving, you're only asking the students to stick around an extra day--they still get the 3 day weekend to go home and see family. Once they leave campus, however, experience has shown that it's tough to get them to come back on Friday or Saturday, with Friday actually being the worst possible day, and Saturday only slightly better. Texas is a big state, and A&M's student body draws from the entire state. Maybe a quarter of A&M's student body would be able have Thanksgiving with the family within 100 miles of Kyle Field, which would permit a Friday or Saturday day trip that didn't kill the weekend, but for the rest, its an either/or proposition.
The conference and TV partners are OK with playing the game on Thursday as there are simply too many quality games on that Saturday. Sure, the NFL game will beat it in the ratings, but the game will get more visibility than it would if buried among an avalanche of quality games on Saturday (this year, it looks like the game would be 3rd choice, at best, behind the Iron Bowl and the Egg Bowl).
So, while the Thursday game maybe inconvenient for you (and me), it works best for A&M students, and, since we're talking about college football, that really ought to be a primary factor in the decision making. We're still going to have some students that opt to go home rather than stay for the game, historically, that's been less of a problem for a big game on Thanksgiving Day, than on Friday or Saturday of that week.

I appreciate your long and well thought out response.
What doesn't hold water with me though is the "what is convenient for the students" argument.
What about all of the LSU students who were inconvenienced for years with the Friday Arkansas game? Nobody ever seemed too concerned about them all those times we had that game force-fed to us on Fridays.

logistically our games would be better attended on saturdays so fans could have thurs and fri off with family.
if you want to be with your family over a holiday why not spend the actual holiday with them and come back on the weekend?
put the iron bowl saturday at 2:30 move the mizzou vs arky matchup to the friday 1:30 slot and let the NFL play on thanksgiving.
we'll take saturday night.

And I've got no problem with LSU keeping their home game on Saturday. That works just fine for me.

that's mainly what i'm talking about, LSU home games.
tamu can do what they want for their home games.
we'll play them in russia on xmas like rocky 4.

quote:I agree, Black Friday sucks. I hated it when we were forced to play on that date. As to why LSU didn't make a stink about it, what percentage of LSU students live more 100 miles from Baton Rouge? I'm guessing that the majority live within that range. LSU's student section isn't nearly as big as A&M's is either, so the potential for acres of empty seats is not as large.

The good news is that I think Black Friday games are dead. You'll get to play this game on Saturday when it's at Tiger Stadium, so you'll get half of what you want, and I would assume, the more important half at that.

So they get to get their way, but the second we open our mouths we are bitching about nothing.
This is exactly correct.
What does this mean?
You are saying that they should be able to schedule their home games as they want, but we don't even get to voice our opinions on when our home games are played? That can't be what you are arguing, right?

When I was a student, I never attended a Thanksgiving weekend home game. There was no way I was going to miss out on the family deal, and one of the bigger outdoor weekends of the year at that time of my life.

I am not sure what we are all arguing about then.
I think the thread title is deceptive. We will never play on a Thursday night at home…that is a given. I guess it is possible at some point that maybe we are asked to play on Friday, like we used to do with Arkansas, but I hope not.

Now LSU fans are mad that they don't get to dictate when Aggy plays their final home game.
It's not about LSU dictating to the Aggies when to play their home games, it's about the SEC not dictating to Aggies when to play their home games, like they have done to us for nearly 20 years with the Black Friday 1:00 PM game. The complaint about Alleva is that either doesn't put up a fight, or is too weak to point out when "fair is fair".

Is there one aspect of LSU sports that gives you any satisfaction? You are consistently upset with everything.

Sounds like you just like to bitch. This was decided two years ago, and you're still bitching about a game that will happen almost 300 miles away from you and is, as you have said, not as important as spending that day with your family.
Again, some of us like to travel to the away games, and this makes it a giant pain in the arse with no benefit on our end. If we agree to do this we should get the return game on Saturday night....not Friday afternoon. And for those who don't like the bitching, do you have season tickets? I have 8, all in the lower bowl with TAF fees attached to them, so I'm a paying customer and I'll bitch when things aren't handled to my satisfaction. When you go out to a 5 star meal and get something McDonalds worthy, do you just accept it?

Did you stop to think that Black Friday is a bad day for our fans/students as well? I'll go no matter when the game is played, but no doubt there are a lot of no shows for that Friday game. All we want is a guarantee the return game will be played on Saturday night.

Alleva tried to calm the backlash about the Thanksgiving game in College Station by claiming that he worked out a deal to get more games in Baton Rouge on Saturday night. Now Alleva is crawfishing because that ain't the case as it relates to A&M.

"It's already been discussed," Sherrill said Wednesday. "It's been talked about. Commissioner Slive, they all have talked about it, and LSU and A&M is going to play on prime time on Thanksgiving night, because that game will draw more people than the Arkansas-LSU, or Arkansas-A&M.
But Alleva wasted no words in shooting Sherrill's comments down.
"Well, that’s totally wrong. I don’t think Jackie knows what’s going on," Alleva said on an interview found on Bayou Bengals Insider. "I don’t think he’s been at SEC meetings and I don’t think he’s knows what’s up."

LSU and Texas A&M have long been regional rivals and Arkansas could end up the season with its more natural rival, Missouri, which joined the conference with A&M last season. Alleva said he was not in favor of playing the game on Thanksgiving Day

You're pretending that Aggy has been given preferential treatment. If LSU wants that game on thanksgiving at home, they'll have it all the same. If Aggy wants all home Saturday night games, they'll be denied just like LSU.

We have no intellectual right to bitch about anyone's tradition; ours wasn't important to us; let's let others treat theirs as they will.
