Hmm, get paid seven figures to do what you enjoy OR stay in the good graces of fickle LSU fans who are nearly impossible to please (see: Johnson, Jay).
I’m sure that was a tough decision.

It's going to be awkward when SC comes to the Box next season

Skip just turned 87 y/o a few weeks ago. He was born on 5/23/1938. What a true legend!

Skip came and spoke to my dorm (Herget Hall, co-ed, tons of hotties) my freshman year (fall of 2000). Keep in mind, he had just DOMINATED the 90s and won it all in the summer before this get-together.
Skip starts taking questions from the kids in attendance...
My 18 year old dumbass: " Hey, Skip, do you think you'll coach long enough to pass USC coach Rod Dedeaux in national championships?"
Skip, obviously realizing that you can't please any or all LSU fans: "Well, dumbass freshman (paraphrasing with his eye rolls at me), it's REALLY hard to win even one title, so I'm very happy with the success we've had with our program. Rod was a great coach and a great man and he deserves all the praise he earned."
Basically, Skip took the high road by not telling me to STFU Freshman
I really appreciated his tact and diplomacy in the moment

Mainieri was set-up to be almost beloved and always looked at in a good light, had he remained retired and connected with LSU. I'm not sure it'll feel the same if he tries and comes back after a failed stint at South Carolina.
Take a look at Ron Polk and Mississippi State. He coached at Georgia after leaving and seems to still be a legend at MSU.

I'm sure he could have done coaching clinics and one on one coaching as often as he wanted to around Louisiana.
Those do nothing to satisfy the desire to compete. You want him to forgo what he wants to do, so you can see him hang with Skip and JJ a couple of times a year? That seems like a stretch to ask of someone. Especially someone LSU was tired of and wanted gone.

I hope the money was worth it to Mainieri because he could be down there with Skip.
Calm down.. The man wanted to coach, he didn't trash the program on the way out

Mainieri and Polk should not and cannot be compared. Lmao. Polk is a legendary coach.

Paul says he's returning to Louisiana when he is done at South Carolina:

“A lot of mixed emotions,” Mainieri said. “Baton Rouge has been my home. Louisiana’s been my home. I loved working at LSU, 15 years as a coach and three more years as an ambassador. Things just kind of fell in my lap this weekend. I’ll never lose my love for LSU or for the state of Louisiana. In fact, when I’m done coaching at South Carolina, I signed a five-year contract and I can’t imagine going any further than that. Whenever the time comes, I’ll be moving back to Louisiana and it will be my home for the rest of my life. We’re keeping our residence here. For now, I am ready for the new challenge and am highly motivated to succeed at a high level.”

Paul has more wins and a CWS title

to do what you enjoy
Does he even enjoy it?
He always looks miserable when they show him on TV, both at the end of his LSU tenure and now at USCe.
I do agree it would be impossible to say no to the money he was offered.
