Skip Bertman has always been puzzling to me, because by all accounts he was a rare great man, yet he was an assistant coach until he was 46. An assistant baseball coach, back then, didn’t make squat.
He spent 10 years as a high school coach. I don’t mean to disparage that, but how could a man of such manifest talents sit at a high school for ten years.
At any event, I’m glad he ended up at LSU. RIP

I can remember in Skip’s first season a certain pitcher started a game.
He walked the first batter. The second batter got a hit and the pitcher did not go to back up or cover a base but remained on the mound just watching as the play unfolded
Skip walked hastily to the pitchers mound and immediately removed the pitcher from the game.
I thought to myself “this guy doesn’t screw around”

my friend and I used to go under the main grandstand at the old alex box and play cup ball and no one got in our way while our dads watched the game
he eventually played for LSU under Skip

Baseball as a sport didn’t have the fan interest back when Skip was teaching and coaching high school. His career growth coincided with the nationwide growth of baseball as a college sport. Cable tv and the Road to Omaha etc.
