Simmons gets a lot of his points in transition and cleaning up the boards.
Agreed. He still takes people off the dribble. I was just pointing out the things he does well.

It's Stephen A. who trashed us the most. He flat out said at the end that good players should never come to LSU based on how we have misused Simmons.

You make some good points but no moves off the dribble? Come on be real! He has great moves if he can get a driving lane. But teams know this and make it super hard for him to drive. That's when his lack of a jump shot really hurts.

then finish at the rim with either hand?
But he only finishes with his right hand. I've seen numerous times where he drives left and forces up an awkward, unbalanced shot with his right hand because he's uncomfortable finishing with his left. Very strange.

Nobody pays attention to this guy.
I think everyone include a lot of folks here thought that Simmons was going to be just like LJ when he jumped straight from high school to the NBA. At least that is the type of hype this kid was getting.

Who rated him?
Did Ben rate himself?

I'll never say a negative word about Simmons BUT I don't get how his skill set is so appealing to NBA franchises as a #1 pick. He has the size and handles of KD but has yet to develop a consistent shot. On the other hand, those same handles and open court vision turns his focuse away from playing post. I just feel that his size is useless on be perimeter if he can't shoot well. Idk, I wish that he's commit to playing the paint and getting higher percentage shots. I believe that NBA guards will eat him alive and that guard mentality that he has will get him destroyed by NBA bigs.

this is exactly right. We're all enamored with a 6'10" guy with his handle and athleticism, which is fantastic in transition.
But that doesn't necessarily translate into a dominant basketball player. In half-court sets, his game is quite limited.
His skill set seems misplaced with his body size. Big, strong, athletic NBA big guys will abuse him down low. Smaller, quicker guards will stop his penetration because they won't respect his perimeter jumper, which is non-existent. If he had a good jump shot, he'd be damn-near unguardable.
It'll be very interesting to see how his NBA career turns out, because I'm just not seeing a dominant player here. And if you're not dominant in college, the odds of being dominant in the NBA are certainly lower. Yes, I realize he can improve, but every other NBA player can improve as well.

and this is why he is so highly regarded
NBA scouts are confident that they can teach him how to shoot a jump shot
its not like his mechanics for a jump shot are horrible, it wouldn't be a hard fix, its mostly a mentality thing for him

He dont have that Dawg in him like other elite players. Too damn passive.

I agree players can improve their jump shot, but usually it starts with a guy that actually has some semblance of an outside game. Ben just has NO outside game at all.
To expect him to go from zero to a good perimeter jump shot, when he'll be playing against far better defenders every night, is a bit of a stretch for me. I hope he can do it, but I'm skeptical.

If Ben is overrated then I don't believe that reflects poorly on Ben or his game. The notion of pre determining a player's value before they even compete at a certain level is an outside factor and those making these determinations may well be overrated as experts.
Ben is a damn fine basketball player but he still has a great deal of potential to unlock. It was always unlikely he would reach his full potential in one year at LSU.
