Since it’s tax season - TAF vs. NIL

Word on the street is that Jimbo spent more than $30M on NIL directly. It has certainly paid off IMHO. A mediocre school like aTm just beat almost every blue blood in recruiting this year and are blazing a path to repeat it next year.

Although, I enjoy supporting student athletes generically plus getting an added tax deduction from TAF has been nice, I’m not sure that we can remain competitive under the current system.

I wonder if a more direct line for donations can be used directly for NIL.

I like NIL and the kids deserved to be paid. Unfortunately, there are several downsides:

- Titke IX will be strained
- Facility upgrade dollars dwindle
- some coaches, especially assistants, will find themselves make less money than an 18 y/o

Would TRant be willing to forego the tax write off to get higher caliber players if it meant moving the money to a different pot?

You can claim NIL as marketing expense.

It paid off in terms of recruits, but there's no guarantee it'll translate into wins. LSU the last few years is proof that you can't just show up and win because you're more talented. All those recruits, and TAMU still won't win shite.

Count me out. I donate a small amount to TAF, but I don't have "frick you" money to just stroke a check for some kid to play football Even if I did have that kind of money, personally, I think I'd be hardpressed to contribute in that way. I'll always support LSU however I can, but they ain't paying my bills.

I don’t see this as a downside. I personally think Title IX is a sham, and whether enacted for the right intentions, the current application of this law has severely limited opportunities for male athletes.

They can fold the program before I give a player a fricking nickel.

This came from a poster on an OU message board yet it somehow continues to get passed around as fact. To be competitive in NIL will not require anywhere this amount of money for a recruiting class and there's no way A&M's boosters spent that.

We get all the 5* and turn into a Bama esque dynasty all those other $$$ concerns will go away. Revenue will increase, donations will spike, all of it gets taken care of.

We live and die based on how well we recruit. I know it’s not everything but the biggest/most important thing for sure. Take care of that, go from there.

So to your question, yeah I’d gladly forgo the write off if I had to.

Speaking of taxes, the payments are taxable income to the players.
