Should LSU 1001 be a required course for students?

I've long wondered this question. Would more students/alumni love LSU just THAT much more if they had to take a 3 hr course on LSU? It would certainly help the GPAs of freshmen & athletes...

Some students have serious academic course loads to worry about. It's not worth wasting engineering, architecture, etc. students' time. Athletes are probably taking it anyway.

How or why is it a waste to learn about the institution that is providing that education?
How can you know where you're going if you don't know about where you've been?

Isn't that what orientation is for? A full semester course is overkill.

I wouldn't be opposed to that for any school. It's good to know your history. I had to take Books and Berries. Pure waste.

I think it's a one hour course. And I think it's about institutional history, not just football chants.

Oddly enough, I remember that freshman seminar class being filled up. Most likely by all the athletes.

I think it's like BIOL3000 and all it is is a 3hr course pass/fail that teaches you about what you can do with a biology degree if you don't go to med school or the likes.

Make it an elective that counts towards your degree and not forced.
Hell I would have enjoyed learning about LSU sports and Academic history over the Dairy Science I had to take my senior year when I realized I was an elective short.

Tuition was $4000 this semester for 15 credit hours. Why would anyone want to spend $800 on a 3 hour course that 1) could potentially make a student graduate a semester later, thus having to pay more than $800 in the long run and 2) a student could just attend STRIPES as an incoming freshmen and get their LSU history lesson/ chanting practice in as a first year student.

I'm sure the LSUAA would love that, but I'm afraid inculcating young folks to be better donors isn't the primary point of a college education.

The point of a college education is to prepare young people so that they can thrive in a modern, information-based democratic market economy. If they do thrive, hopefully they will remember LSU once they graduate and move on to good careers.
