The downsides:

Risk a career ending injury because the Offensive Line is learning what they are doing and are going to have injuries and rookie errors that open the door for tough hits on Howard.

The upsides:

Develops along with a young line as they get more in sync with one another / improved communication in the long run;

Allows more synergy between QB and Receivers;

Allows more synergy between QB and running backs / Tight Ends for both blocking and receiving out of the backfield;

Allows recruits to envision what the long-term plan is at LSU and how they fit into the same;

Allows Howard to be "battle tested" in real circumstances that are not garbage time; and

Allows all to see what potential Howard brings to the table including his ability to check down, see the field, use his legs as he can and show grit and leadership that helps the team surround and support him.

It has happened at many many schools. They groom a talented qb allowing him to learn by throwing picks and losing games. That is how you learn what not to do and what to do. Burrow wasn't a world beater in his early years in college. His first year at LSU was not spectacular, but without what he learned in 2018, 2019 doesn't happen.
JD is not the future of LSU football, even if he is the best we have presently. LSU is not winning anything this year, so give either Nuss or Howard the rest of the snaps this year. Give them a chance to learn at SEC speed. Who cares if we win 5,6 or 7 games this year...what does that get us? Nothing
What does playing young QB's get us....a future.

f he is really the next great LSU QB. Just play him. What would it hurt?

Ask all the next great QBs who we were forced to play as true freshmen; Brandon Harris, Jordan Jefferson, and the other freshmen we tried that didn’t make it big.

You have no concept of momentum for a program.

We pull out an 8-4 season with an upset of a bama or ole miss? 9-4 with a bowl win? That’s a huge building block from where we have been the last 2 seasons.

Tua got thrown into the National Title Game as a True Freshman

Bama always has one of the best OL’s to protect their QB.

We never were going anywheres before the season started so let’s put this true freshman out there to get killed! That’s a smart move!

With this Oline it isn't a good idea that is why.

Plus, if he is the guy, he will be leaving early for the draft anyway....

Let Howard play ARK, UAB, A&M and the bowl game.

Nuss 1st half, Howard 2nd half.

Watch what playing Jarret Lee to early did and get back with us

Anyone who thought this team had a chance at a NY6 bowl game had unrealistic expectations. This is a total rebuild. That takes a little time.

He already has the best arm in the room and can read defenses. He was never mentioned in the QB race because it was decided that he will redshirt and learn this season.

This narrative repeated by many LSU fans is ridiculous

Did Burrow leave after his 3rd year? He wasn't the guy until his redshirt senior year.

The QB we faced yesterday is also a senior. Do you think he is the guy?

Plenty of players that turn into "the guy" redshirt.
