I will say right off the bat, Josh Smith was robbed completely. His numbers overall are right up there with Kessinger.
Martin the 2nd team selection has big power numbers but is an awful defensive short stop fielding barely over .900 with 20 errors on the season.

Josh isn’t exactly stellar defensively either, he has had his share of error this year. Also his bat is average.

The #1 preseason and thats it???
First-Team All-SEC - nobody
Second-Team All-SEC Team - Dups
Freshman All-SEC Team - Cole

Just curious how long its been since LSU didn't have a player on the All-SEC first team?

Josh fielded .952 with 10 errors on the season in 55 games
Martin fielded .905 with 20 errors on the season in 55 games
I can't begin to describe the difference in that, it's MASSIVE. Kessinger the 1st team selection was .967 fielding with 7 errors in 56 games.
He hit .341 this year, and .431 OBP, led the team in both categories, WTF is up with saying his bat is "Average"?

What?!?!?!?!?
Josh has been our most productive hitter.
And his defense is still well above average. I mean he isn't Austin Nola but he's still very good compared to most.

Ok Martins numbers are REALLY bad. But Josh’s aren’t that great either. Neither one of them deserve to be recognized for their glove.

Yes he is OUR most prouductive hitter, which isn’t saying much.

Last year had no one on first or second team.

Smith will not play ss in pros - no lateral moves - a 3b & he hits when it does not count

In a vacuum those are All American type numbers for a SS lol

Some of you people are downright ridiculous. I'm not going to sit here and try to tell you that we've had a successful year as a team but to try to downplay Josh Smith's performance is simply crazy.
.341/.431/.507
.938 OPS
12 doubles, 7 homers
58 runs, 34 rbi
15/19 stolen bases
.952 fielding %
10 errors total on the year
Literally every single team in college baseball would take that production from their shortstop every single season.

I think you're missing the point. It's not an all offensive or defensive selection for SS...well it shouldn't be. Smith is a great combination of solid fielder and really good batter. Martin is an absolutely pathetic fielder while being a really good power hitter.
The issue is they basically ignored Martins defense for that 2nd team selection, no SS with 20 errors should ever be all SEC unless they hit like .380 with 20 home runs.

You really are clueless. .341 avg and .431 obp is ridiculous numbers for a capable SS.

Hell every single team in every level of baseball would take that kind of production from their shortstop. Josh Smith has quietly put together an amazing season

The second quote are Bergman’s numbers his junior year. To put Smiths in perspective.
Bregman was the number 2 pick in the draft. Anyone who doesn’t think Smiths numbers are all conference worthy are out of their damn minds

Really the weirdest part is that Kessinger was 1st team and Smith was left off. Kessinger and Josh Smith are nearly identical. Smith is a little better offensively and Kessinger is a little better defensively.
If you don't care about defense then Martin is obviously the best offensively. If you feel like Kessinger is better than you really have to feel like Smith is better as well since they are so similar. Casey Martin should have either been 1st team or left off. I don't know how you come up with "Kessinger's defense outweighs Martin's offense but Martin's offense outweighs Smith's defense". That's really the indefensible part.

Not being a homer but would take Smith. Bio does say Martin primarily played 3B as a freshman last season. so could see where the errors could increase @ SS as a starter. SEC voters love the long ball.
