USCALOOSA -- Former Auburn football player Stanley McClover was one of four former Tigers to make claims of receiving money from university boosters.

One booster, he reportedly claims, was from LSU where Alabama coach Nick Saban coach at the time.

Saban was asked Wednesday about McClover's claim, which will air tonight on HBO's Real Sports.

quote:

"I don't really know much about it, but I can promise you this: we've never ever given a player anything," Saban said. "And I've never ever known about giving a player anything. And I don't know much about what those guys are saying. I haven't seen the articles. I haven't seen the show. I don't know what they're saying. I really would rather focus on what we're doing here in this program. And I would really question whether anybody's ever received anything from any of our coaches or any people that are involved with our program. That would be a real surprise to me."

He could throw LSU under the bus and take out his biggest competition in the West.

If not more honorable, at least smarter. It would be very hard for him to throw LSU under the bus without incriminating himself, at the very least for knowing about it and not reporting it.

"I guess I have to say it," Saban said. "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

If he corroborates what the HBO special has implied, he would basically be incriminating himself.

His evasive answers come out of self interest and little else.

Nothing wrong with that, of course; but let's be real with ourselves.

no matter how much you want to win, the greatest know that you dont do that by disabling your opponents by means other than those on the field

There are some exceptions to that statute of limitations according to some who post regularly on this topic. Try to find those as I'm about to watch the HBO piece!!!

To me that's the key phrase. He gives himself plausible deniability as long as he doesn't know specifics.

ETA: I think coaches at all major programs, and a ton of lesser ones have that mentality.

We don't need him to be honorable, the NCAA's case has prescribed. I.e. they can't touch us, even if we are guilty, so no need to worry.

Sounds more like a Saban quote now.
