Stanford Steve talked about it on some podcast where he said Rick Neuheisel's idea was to play the bowl games at the beginning of the season.

You would move everything up a week to Week 0, and that way the championship is essentially played on New Year's Day or right around then.

I don't mind that idea. Think it would certainly generate more interest from CFB fans as a whole who are desperate for any football at that time, and you would probably get more people to travel to the smaller bowl games.

It would be a good way to keep competitive non-conference matchups as well, forcing the top teams to at least play someone of value outside of a rent-a-win.

So a team that earns a bowl plays in it with an entire new roster the following season?

Makes sense

Yeah I don’t see how you make bowl matchups at the beginning of the year because roster turnover for just about everyone is so dramatic. Only thing it would fix is the opt outs that happen at the end of the year.

Would the bowl game count towards your record? If so, that could present a problem. It is possible that the team that earned the bowl bid is not even close to the team that will play in the game.

ETA - perhaps the early season bowl games could be played as a “pre-season” game and not count towards your record.

That's not really what I was saying, but so what? Isn't that what Senior Day is for or your final game in November?

Obviously, this isn't a perfect idea and there will be a season of players that won't get the opportunity to play their final game in a bowl game.

This is strictly a way to generate more interest and entertainment value. I don't watch the bowl games because "Hey this is the last time some of these guys will step on the field for this team!"

Don’t like it

So hypothetically TreyDez or Whit Weeks tears their ACL in bowl game before our season even starts?

I tried to explain this is a different thread and people cant get over the word "bowl".
lose the word entirely. its an expanded kickoff classic.

you want to play post-season football? make the playoff.

But you have the same amount of time to get your team ready. It's just pushed up a week. Wouldn't the solution be to push fall practice up a week?

Is that a whole lot different than what bowls have become now?

I think it should count toward your record. It's part of the season. Again, it's not a perfect idea. But it's how your going to see more non-conference matchups that are worth watching.

I'd rather watch Ohio State vs. Texas as opposed to Ohio State and Youngstown State to kickoff the season.

It's the first game of the season. Same risk as in any other game. It's no different than when Jacobian Guillory tore his Achilles vs. Nicholls State in 2024 in the second game of the year.

The difference is that the win or loss with a depleted/new roster in the bowl game now is irrelevant.

If you move the bowl game to the beginning of the following season with a new roster the win/loss could be huge.

Yes, I’m sure fans are going to travel in sweltering 100 degree heat and humidity to watch in effect a sloppy preseason game in the outdoor stadiums (most bowl games).

The wife and I attended the 2019 LSU at UT-Austin game and, other than the great outcome, it was a 4 hour sauna experience.

Teams should be rewarded for what they accomplished that season!

So stupid. Imagine the heat! And the TV stations would never go for it, because there'd be way too many bowl games on simultaneously. Bowl games are spread out for TV purposes. They want their games on TV with no competition.

For all non playoff bowls only.
The only other add would to all all teams have the winter break to practice ie mini-camp.
Move signing day back to February.
Move transfer portal back to May.
Move coaching moves back to May.

I mean you don't have to go to the games. You think there won't be 100K+ in the sweltering humidity when Clemson comes to Baton Rouge next year?

Again, this isn't a preseason game. This is the first week of the season and this game counts against your record. It's not a true "bowl" game in that sense, but a glorified Kickoff Classic. You can call it a "bowl" or whatever you would like.

You would just spread them out over the course of the week. You would have the top matchups on the weekends obviously.
