The best showman in basketball history. I don't think he'd be allowed the free reign today to put on the type of show he was allowed to back then, but fortunately for all of us he played in a time and in a situation where we all benefitted.

The absolute greatest of all time. His scoring record may never be broken, and he achieved it before the 3 point shot came into the game. He would have averaged over 56 points a game. Mind numbing statistics. While he shot was a feathery thing of beauty, it was his "show time" dribbling, passing and play making skills that brought down the house.
We will never witness a "Pistol" like that again in our lifetime.

One of greatest memories was being able to meet Pistol Pete as a substitute ball boy one night for the New Orleans Jazz.

Pete's sudden passing touched me like no other in sports. To this day, I still get a tear when telling the stories to the youngsters that never had the opportunity to see him play.
College records when freshmen could not play varsity & no 3-point line. His instructional videos are still the best ever done.
With the "real" Jazz, who can ever forget, "Pistol Pete - from the parkin' lot"!

Saw every game he ever played in the old "Cow Palace". There was magic every time he took the court. He was so much better than anyone else at the time. Bird, Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas and many, many more copied his moves.
Playing for his dad was probably a bad idea but if it hadn't happened that way we never would have gotten him here to LSU. All the criticism about him being a ball hog, taking too many shots and he and his dad exploiting LSU was just so much baloney.
No one else could have gotten the shots off against double and triple teams that he did and still hit 44% of his shots. But it was his dribbling and passing that were phenomenal. A showman of incredible talent. A wizard who cast his spells during his brief moment on this earth. I will never forget him.

I was in high school when Pete played at LSU. Neat time. Actually, it was moreso a missing artery on his heart. The right one became enlarged in the absence of the left one, and finally gave out. It is a mystery to me how no one detected this beforehand. Even with the technology we had back then, this could have been picked up in all the numerous physicals he must have undergone.
RIP my man. You passed doing what you loved most and you were the greatest LSU ever had.

I was a freshman at LSU when he was a senior. Got to see most of his home games that year. Can't even discribe hsi play. As much scoring as he did it was the passing that was just unbelievable. First saw him in 1966 when he was a freshman.

His record can be broken but it will have to be from a kid who loves college basketball and is willing to stay four years to do it. Pete averaged 44 points a game over a 3 year period because freshman were not allowed to play back then. If a kid stayed 4 years in college and averaged 33 points a game he could break the record but any kid who averages 33 a game his freshman year would probably turn pro to make the big money. It can be done but in my opinion it is one of, if not the hardest records in sports to break. RIP Pistol. Gone but not forgotten.
