Recap: LSU 79, Florida 61 - Tigers Silence Florida Crowd

After a very disappointing loss at home to Texas A&M, LSU seemed to correct their mistakes in a bloodbath over Florida 79-61. The loss was the Gators worst home loss since 2010. LSU was led by Jarell Martin who scored 22 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. His front-court mate, Jordan Mickey, had his 10th double double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Hornsby and Quarterman each added 15 points apiece.
No one on Florida's squad scored over 10 points in the game, and LSU held Florida to 0.88 points per possession. Dorian Finney-Smith was held to 10 points on 13 shots. The Gators were also held to 3 of 16 from the three point stripe, a place that has helped Florida in the past.
LSU shot 94.4% from the free throw line, 61.5% from three, and 48.7% from inside the arc. They out-rebounded the Gators 35-30 and had a positive AST:TO ratio. The Tigers had control of the game nearly the entire time, playing with a lead from the 12 minute mark of the first half till the end. While the Tigers struggled to finish against Missouri and Texas A&M, LSU's largest lead of the night was the final score as LSU was able to drain clock and hit late shot clock jumpers.
For the third straight game, Darcy Malone got the start, and while he did pick up 4 fouls in 13 minutes, he is easily our best option right now at center. He made his only shot he took, had no turnovers, and LSU was able to run offense through him without any errors on his part. I'd expect to see Malone continue to start and play between 10-25 minutes based on performance and foul trouble.
Patterson and Quarterman both performed exceptionally off the bench. While Patterson only scored 6 points on 2/3 from the three point line, his contributions go much further than just scoring. He was able to guard the perimeter with a ton of success and brought a calming effect to the floor after Gray struggled with the press.
The win went a long way in some of the computer rankings. LSU's KenPom ranking moved from 59th to 40th. RPI moved from 53 to 42. Even Dick Vitale tweeted out that LSU was one of the "stars" of the night with their big win in Gainesville.
Moving forward, LSU plays at Vanderbilt on Saturday night. Vanderbilt took Kentucky to the wire in Rupp. They play tough and can shoot the ball. Still, LSU has a chance to win on the road at two of the toughest venues in the SEC this week.

South, maybe you should start predicting losses for every game

Great win last night! Keeping the momentum going and hopefully winning a few in a row will be very important for our NCAA hopes.

LSU is 3-0 as the underdog this season. We beat the spread last night by 29 points. Crazy to think you could have played a +525 money line last night...
LSU almost has to have the UK mindset at this point. We know we have better athletes, so our main goal is to stay motivated and work hard. If we do that, we can beat anyone (besides UK).
UK will take more than just being motivated and working hard, but LSU can be great and it all starts with motivation. We have lost to teams that we just shouldn't have lost to.

Great win. Loved seeing Hornsby giving it to the Florida fans late in the game.

Some guys seem to play their hardest when they think NBA scouts are watching.

I don't think it's this. NBA Scouts watch every game. Every game is available on TV or Internet. It's just easier to play hard against teams that you think you must play hard against.

Old Dominion is the only loss that i feel like LSU didnt beat themselves. The Monarchs are solid.

I agree. Every other loss was definitely within reach. While I was angry at the time, ODU is a good team.

Very excited to see Martin play like that. It's as though they need someone other than a coach to tell them to stay aggressive prior to each game. I just think if Martin is an NBA player, those type of games should be expected in sec play. Darcy played alright and CJJ clearly likes his upside, but our starting center has now had 2 sec games where he's played 13 minutes and 17 minutes, and has 1 total rebound...that's terrifying. And lastly, Gray played a very good first 5 minutes, very bad last 10. But I'll never..never understand why we have to just shite on a kid who is crucial to long term success. Gray has a unique skill set that no one else has. I also think he runs on confidence, and his confidence cannot be lower than it is right now. So congrats tiger "fans" on hating on a kid so much that every turnover he has now, is the worst in the history of basketball.

That was the best game of the season for us last night IMO. You could make an argument for the win over WVU, but I think we played better as a team last night than we did in that game. This team is clearly talented enough to beat just about anyone but has been inconsistent. Some of that seems to be due to lack of effort against lesser opponents. If this team can start playing to dominate every game, it will put together a significant win streak.

I don't understand why everyone is automatically assuming we will lose to UK at home. First of all, (besides UK. Hehe...) I think we have the most talent in the SEC. Second, with the game being in BR don't you think the crowd and players will be fired up?. I mean, I'll be surprised if we don't have the biggest crowd of the year in the PMAC for the game.(And yes, UK will have their fair share of fans, they travel well). Finally, look at the box scores of the games UK has played so far in conference. Besides Mizzou, UK has won most of their games by 5-10 point margin. They really haven't been blowing SEC teams out. I don't think UK goes undefeated and LSU beats them in BR.
