For those too young to recall, 1982 was a very special year, 8-3-1 but 11 points from 12-0. Was somewhat a mini history of Coach Stovall, highs and lows. IMHO 82 was one of our best 10 modern teams (certainly behind 58,59,03,07,11,86). Some highlights and welcome other's thoughts. One of best things about 1982 was it was a total surprise, we were coming of 4-7 and no one picked us in top 25 much less to be near top of SEC.

Broke 12 year losing streak bearing bama 20-10 in bham, game was not even near close as score.

Waxed FSU 55-21 in the oranges game. Upset UF in Gainesville in game no where near as close as score

Gave away a win and tied solid TN team 24-24.

Lost as 27 point favorite hosting a bad Tulane team (damn Reggie Reginelli) this is as far as. I know the biggest upset loss we ever have had as far as point spread. And lost close game to John Bond at Miss st. Lost by 1 to Nebraska in a great Orange Bowl.

Absolutely. That team was stacked. They just didn't know how to close the deal.

They didn't have a first down in the first have if I remember correctly. Ramsey Dardar had specific blocking assignment/angles on Mott (from Shaw), their center. Owned him all day. I remember Dalton Hilliard running around left end - faked their db as to run around him and then ran OVER him as if to make an exclamation point. That was the end of The Bear!! What a defense.

The loss to Tulane in the "Revenge Bowl" really tarnished that season. Beating Alabama for the first time after 11 straight losses was surely the high point. Wins over Florida and Florida State were also big. But there were just too many stumbles against weaker opponents. We tied 6-5-1 Tennessee, and lost to 5-6 Miss. St. and 4-7 Tulane. Somehow we finished 11th in both final polls on the strength of a 21-20 loss to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, which invited us before the loss to Tulane. We had fourth quarter leads in all four games but could not hold them.

I would call it a great season that could have been, but wasn't.

1961 going 10-1 and only losing to Rice and winning the Orange Bowl. 1961 could have been another NC.

1986 losing to Miami of Ohio and Ole Miss both in Tiger Stadium and then losing to Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl. Highlight was beating Alabama in Alabama and Texas A&M in Tiger Stadium and both were highly ranked.

Surely not if you are counting to the present. 1982 would barely be among the top 10 teams since 2000, let alone the entire modern era.

Close. It was 11 years (1971 through 1981).

Both great games against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time. FSU would finish 9-3, Florida 8-4.

No doubt we gave away a win in this one, blowing a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter, but I would not consider that Tennessee team "solid". They finished 6-5-1 with losses to Duke, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech. They did, however, upset Alabama and with the tie vs. LSU finished 1-0-1 against the only two ranked opponents they played.

We were huge favorites in both of those games. Both MSU and Tulane had losing seasons, but both outplayed us and deserved to win. I can't remember ever being more disappointed in a team than after that loss to Tulane.

Yes, and it took a ton of breaks in Nebraska's favor for them to make the comeback and win. Three crucial ones:
--Dalton Hilliard scores an apparent TD to put us ahead 21-7, but a penalty negates it and we have to settle for a FG.
--Leading 17-7, we sack the Husker QB at the sidelines on 3rd down to snuff out their drive, but a personal foul (either late hit out of bounds or unnecessary roughness) keeps their drive alive. They would go on to score a TD and pull within 3.
--At one point in the second half (not sure exactly when), we kicked a FG but there was a penalty on Nebraska that would give us a first down, so we took the penalty and took the FG off the board. We had to settle for another FG attempt, but missed, ending up with no points on the drive.

No way they were one of the 10 best, and it would be debatable whether they were even one of the top 20. I can list at least 10 off the top of my head that were obviously better, in addition to the six you listed:

1961
1962
1969
1970
1987
2001
2005
2006
2010
2012

A credible case could also be made for:

1972
1973
1984
1985
1996
1997
2013

That defense was as talented as any we have ever had--all 11 starters spent time in the NFL. The offense had some real stars-Hilliard, James, Eric Martin, Risher. With better coaching that team would have competed for a championship.

The wins against Fla. St. (at home) and Alabama (in Legion Field) were as fun as any games I ever attended. Ole Miss ended up with something like negative 45 yards rushing in a Halloween weekend Tiger Stadium beat down--complete with Mike the Tiger during pre-game coming out of a coffin dressed as a vampire and late in the game fog rising over the south stadium stands.

TN was average...had them beat and let them tie us. That game and Tulane were very disappointing, but we had some real talent in 82.

People sometimes forget about the 2005 LSU team. If LSU wouldn't have gave up that 21-0 lead to Tennessee and heartbreaking loss, LSU would have had an undefeated 11-0 regular season. Although we got drummed by Georgia in the champ. game, LSU made up for it by slaughtering them thug hurricanes.

1982 was A great team... Very fun to watch... Hilliard was amazing... But you need to add the 1987 team to this list... 10-1-1... A very good team....

Dardar in the orange bowl was amazing. Knocked the all American Nebraska center on his butt so many times the announcers finally stopped gloating over him.

Yep. That was a fun year. I was a student at LSU at the time. Then the next year the wheels came off for Jerry Stovall. How quickly things can change.

Not shown well in the video, but Stovall had LSU more or less remain spread across the field rather than going to the ball on the kick-off, to attempt to "contain" Gault. He just ran between two guys at the line and it was over, though Hobley made an attempt to catch him. (ha)

If you watch video of Gault you can see him turn his head toward last LSU defender, apparently (heard from Lsu player on 82 team) gaunt said "beep beep" ala road runner cartoon and took off....dude was very fast....see 22:19 mark

As for a top 10 team, maybe not, but now way 1984-1985-1996-1997-1973 were better, just to start wth...none of those had two top grade wins (FSU at Bama) like 82....some of these had no great wins (84,73,96).

3 L's hoss; we destroyed OM on All Hallows Eve night time affair! Yes this was fun year from beginning with the 2 romps over Or St. and somebody else then the great W in GV and Bham. Recall my dad telling me we have a powerhouse team this year!
But yes the T and L's were maddening especially green weenies while sitting in rain in upper deck in total disgust.
Woulda shoudal coulda beat Huskers except the miscues as already mentioned!

Bar has been raised high since that time;
Maybe a small percent of the CLM lovers but I think most would be extremely bummed!
