Wow....all this lists of great
LSU teams and only one person mentions the 1987 team. That team was a wet field (costing us 2 TDs) against Ohio St and Hodson being out against Bama from playing for the NC. Easily top 5 all time.

Coach Bryant said that they hadn't been whooped physically like that since the 60's and first mentioned retiring

LA wise tale. Bryant actually mentioned retiring after beating vandy 24-21 early in the season. Said he didnt think he could get this team up anymore. After the loss to UT he was asked and didnt comment. He never "mentioned" retirement until after the Vandy game and never said another word until the actual day and he said zero about retirement after the LSU game. The staff said they were informed after the Southern Miss game the week before the Iron Bowl where we were blown out and you could tell it was just time. We made it respectable but at one time Southern Miss in the 4th had a 36-14 lead.

As far as the 87 game. We went to BTR with friggin Jeff Dunn at QB. A RS frosh he was starting his 4th game ever and we had just lost to Memphis 13-10 and ended up 7-5 that year. Winning that 22-10 was a surprise. The 87 game to me equated to the 93 game LSU won. Starters out, dinged up, didnt play well. LSU 87 was better and Bama 93 was better. Just too many injuries and the other team played its best game of the season.

Good Post, I happened to be at that Tulane disaster. Rainy cool night, we looked bad that day. Oh yea and we beat the gumps 20-10 that year, the last game I got to watch with my dad. We had listened to a ton of great games on the radio in the 70's and to see them beat the gumps that year was priceless, first time since 1970 season I do believe. Loved it, beat the bear the last time we played them.

82 was a very talented team. Top 10 perhaps on relative talent yes I would agree. In terms of top 10 in performance, simply no way. People mentioned 61, 87, 05 as better and I agree. I would throw in several more as as well. Of the top of my head 69(not even a comparison)84,85,86,88,96,97,02,04,10,12,and 13. No doubt many more before most of us were born. Stoval was a great player at LSU and seems to be a wonderful gentleman and all round nice guy. He simply wasn't a great football coach.

I believe that LSU team had more guys play in the NFL than any team in LSU history to that point. Hell we had 2/3 backups that had solid NFL careers that never started here. That team couldn't win a close game and made several wins closer than they should have been. On a given Saturday they could beat the best teams in the country as evidence of the win over FSU, and the 1 point loss to Nebraska. Yet two losses and the tie were to teams that combined for a finish below .500.
