On a roll in this thread huh?

I will comment on this on JR thing... if you look at stats there is no way you can say Mauck/Flynn are better QB's.

If you wanna base it on hardware that is fine and yes they deserve mention over JR.

In reality you should respect each QB for what they accomplished for their respective teams. Each of them had great seasons and accomplished alot wearing P&G and thats more important. Well at least to myself

1. jamarcus russell - nuff said
2. rohan davey - half of the best combo in lsu history
3. herb tyler - tee martin 2.0 if he had a team around him.
4. matt mauck - won a title

5. matt flynn - good guy but rode coat tails to a title

do you really think any of those old geezers could play the game with the athletes that get run out on the field today in the sec? if we put bert jones or some other hasbeen out there they would make jarrett lee look like john elway.

Do you really think if Bert Jones had grown up in the modern high school football environment that Flynn, Russell, Mauck, etc., developed in he would have turned out to be the same "old geezer" you think of when you remember him?

JaMarcus Russell playing highschool football in the '60s and '70s would have been a 350 pound offensive tackle with 5.3 speed. Without the workout, diet and training regimens developed in the last 30+ years, his athleticism would have been buried under layers of bulk and fat. And without the plethora of camps and clinics available today, none of them would have reached college with the skills they bring to the table today. Guys like Bert Jones, Warren Rabb, Terry Bradshaw, Archie Manning, etc., mostly played the way they did without the benefit of professional, advanced QB training until they started their college careers. Hell, Peyton probably got more coaching before his Senior year of high school than Archie had received when he was drafted.

The timeline runs both ways.

I don't know how spoiled you think LSU fans are supposed to have become over the last decade or so, but there is no team anywhere at any time for whom an SEC Championship is "nothing".

My fault. I didn't mean it how it sounded.

But just because Tee Martin came right in and won a national championship where Manning couldn't, that doesn't make him a better QB than Peyton Manning.

Just like neither Matt Flynn or Matt Mauck can hold a candle to Jamarcus Russell.

I mean this is such a tired and stupid argument.

A word on Bert Jones:

he was 6'3" and 210+. More than sufficient size to play in the NFL right now even without the benefit of modern training techniques. He was the MVP of the whole league in 1977 and had the strongest arm of possibly anyone who has ever played (not trying to quibble over that but there is NO question as to arm strength being sufficient for any era of ball). This is not smallish, "system" guy who would have struggled in today's game. If anything, I think he does better today with the more pass-oriented schemes.

+1000

Always amazing that folks don't recognize that natural skills, talent, hard work, and intelligence will be successful in whatever era one happens to be born. Jones, with modern training, etc., would have been as good in this era as he was in the 1970s.

Jones accomplished what he did in college with virtually no significant coaching. Imagine what he could have done in the current environment.

If you're going to include Mauck and Flynn, why'd you leave out Rabb?

Maybe because Dinardo didn't know what the frick he was doing with the qb position. Booty was going to be the starter that year no matter what.

Rohan got his shot and looked like shite against Auburn when we got destroyed.

I loved Davey. And I know that Championships aren't won only by quarterbacks. But we do understand just how important quarterbacks are in the SEC especially after last year. That's why Flynn is in there. Helped us win a championship!

Of course that is why the question is "all-time," not just what each of us remembers. I don't remember Y.A. Tittle, but he should be on the list anyway. LSU's history of great quarterbacks goes back further than the last 10 years (although we have had some really good ones in the last 10 years too).

understandable statement and no doubt they both probably deserve on there. But it also says YOUR top 5 Qb's of all-time...I chose to keep them to ones I know.
