All I know is what my uncle has told me (he went to LSU while Williams was there), and said that Williams was a black activist and a divisive element on the team.

I don't think Archer got fired for racism. He got fired for losing after two successful seasons with Arnsparger's players.

Thanks for all the info..a few things
1)I thought (but guess I am wrong) that HW did make a commnet to the press along the racist line, but this apparently is not true,
2) The knee injury info is great and makes sesne as he missed the whole next year+
3) I wonder if Eddie Fuller would have made the 88 earthquake catch if HW was healthy as HW would have likley been in...
4) I had heard (only a rumor, NOT saying it is true) that KB had "stage fright" and left LSU becuase of that, had not heard he got hurt or was 1st team? as late as the fall? is this true.
5) Have heard that P, Jenkins was the real chemistry issue (and cause of fight on flight home from 89 UK game), but also heard from former player that PJ was AWESOME and this 100% false.

I played with Harvey. He was not a fricking activitist.....he was a narcissitic jackass. Very talented with a huge head. Personally, I couldn't fricking stand him, but liked Daryll (his brother).

Though I didn't like him, it didn't make him into some kind of diabolical political figure. Just a person i didn't care for.

BTW, dude could seriously throw the hands.....Daryll and he had a couple of epic throwdowns where he took it to D.

Mike got fired for losing........sorry, but it was that simple.

ETA: Eddie was the polar opposite of Harvey, a true selfless, team guy with a heart of gold. Can't say enough nice things about him.

Thanks Charles, GREAT color and 100 makes sense (all you say), one other question, I heard D Williams once cut in front of E Hill during meal time and that E Hill hit him so hard it left a mark (Gator Bowl 87) from E Hill's ring, this sounds possible, but being a fan I am aware it may be bs..any comment? alos, what was the deal on fight on airplane on way back from loss to UK, lots of urban legands out there...

I was friends with HW at LSU and Troy L. He actually married his white girlfriend and liked to party and sometimes came to Lafayette. He was an OK guy

I can tell many great plays by Harvey Williams but one of the greatest was actually Harvey tackling a Notre Dame defensive back. I cant remember the exact year but Holtz was coaching at Notre Dame and Tim Brown was playing at the time. Hodson was picked off and it looked like it would be a pick 6 but Harvey ran the back down and I believe caught the guy at about the 2 or 3 yard line. LSU mad a patented goal line stand and I believe on 4th down Steve Rehage piled thrugh and stopped the running back on the option play for about a 4 yard loss. Great Memories and again thanks to Harvey Williams for not giving up on the play and making the tackle.

Karl liked the fast cars, IIRC he was stopped doing 115+, trying to get the bad gas out of his tank.
Harvey choked his girlfriend.

I can't answer any of your questions, but I can tell you of a personal meeting with HW. A friend and I went to a LSU basketball game and we happened to be sitting next to HW. He was there with a bunch of people and he was a real nice guy and eas friendly to us. This was during his KC days, because I remember him talking about thst.

Negative, a friend of mine played with Harvey at LSU. He has said more than once that Harvey was very misunderstood. That he was actually a good dude and a good teammate.

Harvey was a POS. Bank on it...every time his giraffe-necked arse got stroked in a game, he came out and, when he'd go back in, he tip-toed the rest of the game. Waste of oxygen in my opinion.

Didn't Harvey Williams get pulled over for going 90-100 mph down I-110?

He actually was running ahead of Hilliard in James in the first part of fall practice that year and injured his ribs and Hilliard and James came on and Karl transfered to USL then played with the Lions in the NFL for a couple of years.

I was at LSU during that time and I NEVER remember Bernard running ahead of Hilliard and James. If Bernard was better than the Dalton and James gang, I seriously doubt that he would have transferred.

Harvey was pissed b/c Sammy Martin beat him timed races and was as equal of a playmaker.

Also, martin was also a fan favorite and that had more to do with Sammy's willingness to keep playing and Harvey's tendency to back off when he was hurting.

Uh I didnt say he was better I said he was running ahead of them for the first week or so of fall practice. He then had a rib injury and missed a week or so before the season and the rest is history. 10-12 year later I asked Jerry Stovall when he was running the B R Sports Foundation and he said yes at the time they were very close and for the first week or so Karl was actually running #1. As the fall progressed and Karl missed some practice due to injury Dalton really came on and was the solid #1 with James #2 and Bernard never really get back in the mix.

Archer would have probably been a solid head coach but the players coach was in way over his head

Prop 48 started when Archer took over. A lot of talented players never made it to LSU due to grades back in those days.
