The QB keep on a RPO is really the third option, and not one that's really required.

The entire point of executing all running plays out of an RPO is that you can freeze linebackers and safeties on passing plays, allowing for receivers to run free and gain an advantage in coverage. They see what looks to be a hand off, hesitate a bit, realize it's a pass, then try to recover. That split second pays off enormously when it comes to WRs getting open.

This also works in reverse - if the safeties are playing higher, the QB can read this and hand the ball off. It's a way to keep the defense honest.

Having a mobile QB is an added benefit, but not a requirement.
thank you.

RPO is not a QB running scheme.

There is a specific instance on an RPO read where the QB should absolutely keep it 75% of the time. And that is when that DE crashes to the inside AND the S (or other defender) is not there or is late to containment. Pulling the ball from the RB only helps draw that DE in (if done properly).

This, if done regularly, drastically affects a defense and you can setup numerous plays, pass and run, if you establish that. If the defense gets scared on the edge you have a huge, and I mean huge, advantage.

RPO isn't about the QB running the ball, QB runs are probably the 3rd or 4th option out of that play call. You need to be able to read the defense presnap and have the ability to audible for a good RPO. I don't think the coaches let Brennan do that Saturday because they didn't think he was ready.

It seemed like we saw an offense where, the coaches call the play and you run that play no matter what. The pass plays often looked like there was one receiver that was supposed to get the balls and everyone else decoys.

I was in record yesterday as saying that I thought Orgeron and Ensminger should have ficused more on the run and not expect a guy who really has not played in 4 years to be relied upon to win the game for you with his first start. The old Miles philosophy would have worked well in this game. Grind it out, tire the defense and put the MSU offense on ice due to 7-8 minute drives. It might not have been pretty, but it takes ALL the pressure off a first time starter to be the guy. It might have even been beneficial to the defense as well.

Something to be said about exerting your will on a team by beating them up slowly instead of relying on a jackrabbit philosophy.

Also , Brennan is absolutely no threat to run with the ball so no need to stay in RPO.
