Aside from the fact that a lot of you were probably down about Saban--a coach you knew was a gamer--deucing for a new game... I'm curious as to how you felt when you heard Les Miles was hired as the next coach?
I was down when Saban left and was really hoping for a similar "big name" hire.
When Miles was hired and they played that "we're gonna keep comin'!" speech over and over after OSU got waxed by Oklahoma, I was like:
, "man, what kind of idiot is THIS guy?" I had never heard of him and figured he'd be a disaster. Man, how wrong I was and how glad I am I was wrong.

Who do you think TAMU should hire as their coach?
Sumlin, if you can get him.

What do you think of them...potential to win in the west?
Aggie, it's going to be awhile before you can think of winning the West. But I think Sumlin in the SEC with Texas and SEC-level recruiting can win in College Station and will eventually make you nationally prominent again.

He didn't have an overly impressive resume to that point, but he did have a reputation of beating OU i.e., winning big games. But did you think the hire was too risky? Did you expect that he would win like he did straight out of the shoot, simply because Saban left a really talented team in tact?
Les' record at OSU was quite comparable to Jimmy Johnson's record. He had some really big wins and only one really bad loss and that was like his very first game. He lost some big lead games, but that's what happens to undermanned teams.
I actually thought Les was the least risky hire that we could have made among the serious candidates we could have hired. The most notable were Petrino, he was at Louisville at the time playing with John L Smith's guys; Jack Del Rio, who has never coached in any capacity at the college level, and I think Glen Mason was involved. Ferentz was a hot name, but he wasn't interested at all. Among these, while the ceiling was in question, I thought he had the lowest floor of all of them.
I really don't know who you should hire, but the number one attribute I would look for is recruiting. You need to get the talent there. You need to get out of the Big 12 mindset of offense first. Offense will help you win the games you should win, but defense is the way to win the games you shouldn't, and you have a lot of shouldn't win games in the SEC.

If I had a nickle for every time one of my CEO buddies said Les Miles is a Teir 2 coach at best, I could retire...
He has changed his tune on Miles...big time...he still mainly talks about the talent level rather than the coaching
Miles is way more clever than we give him credit, way more competitive..
he seems to have really grown into the job now....he is more comfortable than ever.

I wasnt in love with it. I thought at the time they should have gone after a big name coach. I also think that Les has done a lot of learning on the job. I have heard that some of his so called mistakes were kind of forced on him by upper management, co dc fiasco for one, I dont always agree but he knows more than me. Turned out to be an great hire.

I did not know jack about Les Miles when he was hired and I was still mad at the 'Little Lying Elf' for misleading us and stabbing the fans in the heart on Christmas Eve. I thought, however, that this was the type of coach LSU's powers-to be were searching. A coach from a major conference with an improving football program, had demonstrated an ability to win big games, and with NFL experience.
After hearing him speak for the first time, I wished that we had hired a coach that could speak good Southern Enlish. I could not understand him. I learned to speak his language.
aTm should have the want to hire knowledgeably along these lines to fill not only the short-term, but the long-term needs in the up-coming endeavors in the football arena as you begin your venture into a new realm of potential accomplishments desired by the fans of aTm.
Les Miles had a similar resume to Nick Saban, but the want and need to obtain riches at the expense of the fan base and the players he recruited received much less priority with Les than the coach leaving the program.
The larger issue for the fan base was to move from the position of the want of a dry and rigid 'process' to the realm of want for passion, integrity, and mind-boggling excitement.
I do not particulary like any of the condidates you mentioned. I personally would stay away from any protege of The 'Little Lying Elf'. Take one look at Florida, Florida State, and Tenessee. If you feel the want and need to proceed down these roads of endeavors for your new venture in the World's Greatest Division in the World's Greatest Confernece choose a 'Little Lying Elf' model.
I do feel the want to wish you well in this new venture and have a desire to see the Aggies increase the productivty and towering prestige of the SEC WEST. Hope aTm finds the coach to fulfill the aspirations of the administration and fan base of Aggieland.

I didn't know what to think, but after looking up Les' record against Oklahoma i was pretty optimistic, going 2-2 at OSU against OU is pretty impressive.

I wanted them to hire Bear Bryant, but someone told me that he was actually dead....go figure?
Posted on 12/4/11 at 11:29 am to Warrior Poet
I was ok with the hire, but got really worried when he took the field witht the Britney Spears headset.

I told may father I wanted him to be LSU's next coach after OSU lost to OU by a field goal and he said he loved his team and he'd play any sucker in the country.............it wasn't what they planned for today.
He was passionate and pissed...........He sounded like a Tiger Fan.

You knew this guy was legit.

Initially, I felt it was a very weak hire after losing a MNC coach in Saban.
He changed my mind quickly and I've never understood the heat he took. Plenty of coaches have made the exact same clock mistakes without taking as much heat.
^ this. I was leery at first since he was coming from a smaller school but he had won me over after his first couple of games. The way he held the team together after Katrina was amazing.

I was ambivalent. I thought that the decision seemed rushed. Saban sorta left them holding the bag, so they did well, especially given the circumstances.

I knew nothing about him........I thought LSU could've done better with the hire...........I even thought Les was black.
Now I kinda like the guy.
