That's because those two were actually being considered for the job. Our idiot AD thought they were the only coaches available in the whole of college football. There were quite a few that thought Mullen at least deserved a look.

Whether by design or luck, it is looking more and more likely that LSU got the very best HC available.
Bear Bryant said it best - "It ain't the X's and the O's, it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's".
And Coach O is bringing in the staff to give the Jimmy's and the Joe's the best chance to excel. (O's gotta do something about getting the WR's mega reps, tho)

Mullen was always going to UF when it came available
Also, the AD contacted multiple coaches through their agents about the position. This myth that it was just a knee jerk is ridiculous.
Jimbo was going to be the guy, that got sidetracked but multiple coaches were contacted about their interest.

We were sitting at about the same place last year. Why is so hard for you to understand its not where you sit in May, but where you wind up at the end. And when we wind up forth in the SEC we are probably not picking up much ground on those we need to overtake.

Jimbo beat a more talented O team. Mullen is 2-1 against O and beat him with a much less talented, more troubled Florida the past season. Herman, for you guys ate up with #6, took a unranked since 2012 Texas and finished top 10 last year.

What about them? They weren't in any conversation I am aware of to come to LSU. But if you want to throw Kirby in with his leading Georgia to SEC championship games and the playoff, a lot of people would take him.

Probably around ten wins just like its been since 2012. There a big talent pool in Louisiana and areas close by. Beat Alabama and win the west? Little chance from what I have seen the last three years.

I don't know where that insecurity comes from.
They cannot make a case for this current coach without using other coaches to prop him up in some way. Inevitably past events involving Miles, Herman, Jimbo, and even Saban are used to prop this coach of ours up.
If he's such a great coach, they should be able to prop him up based on his own merits, like saying Miles won 2 SEC championships and a NC, or that Mullen coached Mississippi St to a #1 ranking. Those are things they did.
