I'd rather it be Pete, but he got the arena named after him and he never even graduated. Shaq is well deserving of a statue, so it doesn't bother me either.
Perhaps more importantly, a Shaq statue will resonate more with recruits than a Pistol Pete statue would.

IMO, Shaq is known as one of the greatest NBA players of all time. He is well known world wide. The statue would be a fantastic recruiting tool for kids to come to LSU. We need any help we can get to rebuild and sustain the bball program. However, I agree that Pete's statue should be right next to Shaq's if he gets one up....Atleast Pete does already have a basketball arena named after
him and i may be wrong but I think the court is named after dale. So if Shaq is the lone statue, I'll be okay with it...

But he still got it, that's the point. LSU HOF requires the former player graduate. Similar rules may have been applied when deciding upon the statue, although I think it has much more to do with all of the money Shaq can give the university.

True, I would be okay with Shaq getting some naming on the building or the 'Shaquille O'Neal Practice Facility'...but the statue should be of Pete or Big Daddy Dale.

His degree is in general studies. That's just 3 minors.

This has far less to do with past accomplishments as an LSU athlete and more to do with restoring a relationship that could net LSU millions of dollars in donations.

If Shaq was really cool he'd insist on having one of Pete as well. It wouldn't diminish his own and he'd not even notice the cost. Now that would be cool. Do it!
