LSU comes in at 4-0 while Belmont comes in at 3-1, their sole loss coming vs Ohio. Belmont is a highly efficient and extremely high scoring team. They're averaging 88ppg and one of the best teams in the country in terms of sharing the ball.

They have 5 players averaging double digits:

C SR Nick Muszynski 6'11 245 - 17.5ppg, 6.5rpg. Not an outside threat, but a great passer as well. He averages 3.5apg which for a big man is outstanding. If LSU gets him in trouble the game won't be close. However, he's extremely good at not getting fouls.

G JR Ben Sheppard 6'6 185 - 15.0ppg. He's a big time outside threat. Averages 6 3-point attempts per game.

G SR Grayson Murphy 6'3 190 - Murphy is a 5th year Senior. He makes things go. 11.5ppg, 6.3rpg, 5.8apg. Only averages 2 3-point attempts per game, but he's 5 for 9 on the season. Pinson and Gaines will need to be locked in on D. He is a 4th year starter which is virtually unheard of in college basketball.

G FR Will Richard 6'5 195 - 11.3ppg, 5.5rpg. Good shooter, good athlete. May or may not start but will play vital minutes.

G SR Luke Smith 6'0 170 - 10.3ppg, big time outside threat. When you're 6 foot tall, you know he's an excellent spot up shooter. Last year averaged almost 7 3pa per game while shooting 39%

F SO Michael Shanks 6'6 215 - Will start but not a key member. He's there to help with length and hit spot up shots.

G SO JaCobi Wood 6'2 180 - Averaged double digits last year, but seems to have lost out on some playing time this year and has started ice cold. Has the ability to score though.

Prediction

This is the biggest test yet for LSU. Belmont can score. Any time a team has the ability to get hot from 3 and fill it up, it's nerve racking. LSU's D has for sure taken a step in the right direction, but we will be challenged majorly tonight.

LSU is long. LSU is athletic. LSU is skilled. I think LSU runs away with this a little bit. Belmont wants to play uptempo. Not sure this is an LSU team to do that with. We have always been about pushing tempo, but this team with Gaines, Eason, Fudge, Mwani, Pinson, Murray is an absolute nightmare in the open court. LSU is -5.5 and I think that's very disrespectful. Belmont is very experienced but don't have a bench or length that will be needed for a game like tonight.

Belmont 77

It will interesting to see how Wade wants to play it. Belmont wants to get into a fast tempo, high shot total game. LSU wants to speed teams up, create steal/deflections, and turn the turnovers into transition baskets.

I'd imagine Wade is going to employ the same strategy he's used for the first 4 games unless Belmont's offense forces LSU to slow down. LSU isn't great at defending in the half court for the full 30 seconds of the shot clock. They ARE great (thus far) at getting steals (best in the nation in steals per possession) and turnovers per possession (3rd in the nation).

If at the end of the game LSU has kept Belmont under 70 and created 15 (or more) turnovers, then I think we can start to say this may very well be the good defensive team we've been begging for. Belmont is likely the best offensive team LSU will play before the SEC schedule starts. Even then, they might be one of the 5 best offensive teams LSU will play all season.

LFGGGGG

Wade will continue to be aggressive on defense to create transition, where we are best.

This offense is going to be a good test for the defense, I am curious to see how we try and handle a good passing big, we usually like to crash on the big I am not sure if we can do that against this team.

LSU is 4-0 ATS this year. This line seems extremely low. I'm taking LSU.

I absolutely hate it when LSU has good position guarding the post, only to watch someone come flying in from the perimeter (usually from the backside) for an unnecessary double-team to try to force a steal. All it takes is one good pass out of the post to get LSU's rotations all out of wack...usually leading to a wide open look.

Perhaps it was necessary when you had Days (undersized) guarding the post or Watford (allergic to defense). But this team has Reid and Eason who seem to be just fine by themselves.

Tonight’s game will come down to defensive rebounding. We need to limit the second chance points. If we win the rebounding battle we win the game.

Am I correct in thinking that outside of the center they lack size and length?

This is where the 3 pt line is the equalizer.
Spacing and ball movement overcomes size advantages. Plus this is a veteran tournament team who won’t easily rattle.

Given their outside shooting and ability to pass well, I hope we double team a little less. We gave up quite a few wide open looks while attempting to double team the last few games. Great shooting teams knock those down. We have the length to guard them straight up.
