You can't pay O big money and afford the coordinators he needs

O needs enough money to still pay top dollar for assts
LSU’s assistant pool is $1 MM less than Clemson or Alabama, $500k less than aTm. We could add a million dollars to Orgeron’s contract AND a million to the assistants and still be outside the top 4 total SEC coaching budgets. If we added $4 MM in total salaries we would still be #3 in the SEC...

We don’t have to pay him absurd money to keep him....so why would we? He has great variable clauses that pay him a ton for achieving greatness.
So you're saying that we should just take advantage of the situation and screw Ed O? Man, I hope I never have to work for you.
Nonetheless, no one is talking paying Ed O absurd money, but paying him fairly is what he deserves. After all, he works his arse off for LSU.
I wonder what USC would do if they ever got a notion that Ed O was very unhappy with his level of compensation at LSU? Especially with Clay Helton being on very shaky ground.
I also imagine that there are a ton of schools out there that would love to get their hands on a national championship-winning coach.

I say put him in the top 3 or 5.

I think LSU becomes the trend setter if u will. Pay a reasonable base salary with incentives making you top five in salary when u win the ship. Work for it

Ed is in his dream job and everyone knows it.
More money has a way of making everyone love their jobs. It would be very easy for Ed to tell his agent to shop him around. As there are a lot of schools who would be very interested in stealing him from LSU. I mean he is a national championship-winning coach and a legendary recruiter. Indeed, why wouldn't they?
I mean Ed O could always shop himself around and then basically blackmail the administration for a mega raise if he chose to do so. Hence, it is better to pay him fairly to keep him happy so he won't be tempted to resort to those kinds of measures.

How many Big 10 championships and national championships has Ferentz won?

Money is a very short term contributor to job happiness. This has been studied quite a lot. Bumps in pay give a temporary uptick in job satisfaction but it isn’t sustaining. So no, paying more isn’t going to be the difference of whether he enjoys the job / wants to keep the job.
He’s going to get more money out of this eventually.

People need to stop worrying about the assistant coaching pool and instead worry about retaining Ed O.
Posted on 1/14/20 at 9:23 pm to lynxcat
Do yourself a favor, stay away from personnel management cause you won't last long.

No one needs to worry about retaining CEO. He isn’t going anywhere at least at the college level.

Sure but this is the best job he'll ever have, both in terms of prestige and fit.

$6 to $6.5 mil
A NC in football sets a coach apart from his peers and so should his salary.

The expectation isn’t national championships. He has kept Iowa relevant for years as a top 15-20 program. Iowa has no business being as good as they have been over the last decade. It is the antithesis of a talent rich region and yet he continuously outperforms his neighboring peers.
LSU is a gorilla on one of the richest recruiting grounds in the country neighbored by the most die hard football states in the USA. Success at LSU and Iowa are very different definitions; thus; comparing the coaches like-for-like is misrepresentation.

5. Kirby Smart Georgia $6,871,600
6. Gus Malzahn Auburn $6,827,589
7. Tom Herman Texas $6,750,000
8. Jeff Brohm Purdue $6,600,000
9. Lincoln Riley Oklahoma $6,384,462

11. James Franklin Penn State $5,650,000
12. Pat Fitzgerald Northwestern $5,144,937
13. Mike Gundy Oklahoma State $5,125,000
14. Scott Frost Nebraska $5,000,000
I made 2 posts about a similar topic about coach O beating 7 out of the top 10 highest paid coaching and we had one more to defeat, Dabo, which we just did. So, now 8-10 coaches O beat this year alone.
Most coaches on consistent top 20 teams have a clause in their contract that if they win the Natty, then they get the average of the top 3 or top 5 salaries. In this case, the top 5 coaches make a combined $40m per year / 5 = $8m per year.
All I have to say about the guys that keep mentioning coach O needs a small salary to pay OC and DC, is now irrelevant... The man just won the National Championship in his 3rd year!!
Let me show you why. First of all we have Scott Woodward now as AD, who recently gave Jimbo a $75m 10 year contract all guaranteed.. Just wow. So, Jimbo makes $7.5 a year and all his assistants make $6.8m = $14.3m total A&M coaches salaries. Note: OC makes $800k and DC makes $1.8m, so Jimbo and OC/DC makes a total of $10.1M
Coach O makes $4m per year. All his assistants make $6.9m = $10.9m total LSU coaches salaries. Note: OC makes $800k and Aranda makes $2.5m, so Coach O and OC/DC makes a total of $7.3M, $2.8m less than A&M
That is Texas A&M pays their coaches $3.9m more than LSU, therefore give Coach O $3.9m raise or $4m to $8m like I mentioned on top, where he gets $8m, and they make the same as A&M, whom they beat 50-7 this year.
Now, if O is still not needing that much and still wants to keep a pool for quality assistants, then he should take a 6.5M 5 year deal, then they will always have an extra $2m to pay assistants to be even with Texas A&M pay
