Please educate this 60 y.o. former HS player. Why do helmets come off so easily now?

Would have never happened back in the day. Why so often now? What's different about the helmet construction?

probably like shoes and pants, they don't believe in using any restraining mechanisms.

Hair and it’s safer for them to come off on some hits because it lessens the blow to the head

Back in the day, you had to rip year ears off to get your helmet off. I have no clue why they come off so easy these days. I never heard anyone say it was by design.

I know a former very high profile player who won a championship at LSU and he says its because the snaps are plastic and not metal anymore.

Players don’t tighten them down, believing if the helmet flys off, my head will be fine.

It’s like my friend who didn’t wear seatbelts because he was thrown from a crash that would have sent a fence post through his head.

Still have mine from high school with the blue ring on the inside. Back then, that was the only helmet with the chin strap snaps up at the top. Riddell also had an air helmet, but it wasn’t nearly as cool.

From an engineering perspective I believe the connection appurtenances (i.e., snaps and buckles) are designed to break away. Why? To transfer energy from the body or head.

It's the same engineering philosophy that goes into car frame designs to transfer the energy in an accident from the passengers. Of course some car companies do better than others and you pay for the best in terms of design, research, construction and materials.

There is however a risk of getting injured after a helmet is lost but I believe that once a helmet is lost it's against the rules to continue to play.

10 or 15 years ago the helmet manufacturers changed the design of the ear hole and made it longer to provide more helmet protection for the jaw and chin. Now the chinstrap becomes loose when the helmet is compressed because the strap is more horizontal with the chin.

They don’t strap them down tightly.
