No he stuck him as the closer because it was obvious from the start he wasn't going to fulfill a starting pitching role.

So Bradshaw, Ross, Bertuccini, Byrd, and all of our staff could have done what Ott did if given the opportunity?

Maybe not everyone but I will say the majority could aside from Bradshaw and Byrd.

Arent most freshman "projected" as starters when recruited?

Why give him the role over the other freshman and the other upperclassman who arent starters?

Was Ott better than every other pitcher not named Coleman and Ranuado?

Why do you hate Matthew? Did he hook up with your ole lady?

No he wasn't better but he gave the team a better chance pitching one inning than did the others. The others had more of a multiple-inning potential when Ott was a very short term reliever.

Even Bertuccini? The "gimmicky pitcher that other teams could easily figure out"?

I cant get over this.

If they could, then why is noones K to BB ratio near what Otts is? The ability to record a save has nothing to do with K To BB ratio:

Each with a minimum of 20 innings pitched, not named Byrd or Bradshaw.

Again, Matty Ott 2.68 6 to 69

Chris Matulis 4.82 15 to 39
Nolan Cain 4.01 10 to 38
Paul Bertuccini 3.86 15 to 31
Ben Alsup 6.14 10 to 24

Noone comes close

Bertuccini would be a good closer because he is gimmicky and would only have to pitch one inning at a time.

Ott was better than "good", and Berts #s were nowhere near what Otts were.

Trust me I know bertuccini's number weren't as good I think he is pretty much worthless which was already discussed in this thread.

So a guy who says "a closer should have near zero walks" wants to replace a guy with an 11:1 strikout to walk ratio with a guy who has a 2:1 ratio.

So 2 and 2 says that you think a worthless pitcher could have done what Ott did last year.

Really the question is why does he hate bradshaw so much....I mean I know hes not ranaudo but come on to put him in with byrd is kinda harsh. He is at least eqaul to Ross. The two are similar pitchers and get on hot streaks (ross at the beginning of the season and Bradshaw at the end) where they can be good SEC starters.

I have not read this whole thread, however I would agree that the pitching is a question mark especially since we lost some HS players to the draft and Chad Jones too. Other than Texas we are still in a pretty desirable situation in comparison to other teams though. A lot of guys with experience. AR will be clutch and outside of that we can patch things together as long as our hitting and defense are solid. Matulis showed signs of being a good lefty change of pace last year. Bullpen didnt lose too much with Cain and Byrd graduating, Chad Jones was the big loss there. Hopefully, a freshman will step up like Matty Ice did last year. There is even the possibility of trying out Matty as a starter or long reliever if necessary. I'm sure PM will have everything lined up properly for a postseason run by mid-season just like last year.

There was WAAAY more questions with the Pitching staff going into last year than this year and LSU won a damn CWS last year. Hell...we had lost our ENTIRE WEEKEND ROTATION for chrissakes. It boggles the mind that there is a 12 page thread about the pitching staff.

Oh..and Westcoasttigah is a blithering idiot...
