Has CPM announced starters?

IMO, we're in a major experimental phase. Just need to find who can do what best and get some roles defined.

Mainieri will be taking the coach O approach to his pitching situation, hope and pray.

I really hope we can get at least 5 innings from each starter. That would really help.

The remaining 12 innings of the series can be pieced together. Vietmeier, Fontenot, and Beck can be stretched out to go at least one time through the order, which hopefully will cover 2+ innings for each. Hilliard and Bain can probably give 2 each. Nowak and Petersen can split the remaining innings.

I was encouraged by how Nowak threw last night. He had a some start but also a lot of multi inning relief appearances in JUCO. Hopefully he develops to the point of being a multi inning reliever for us too.

A silver lining on the starting woes is that it's giving our bullpen a ton of work allowing us to see who can do what in extended roles. Granted, it's not ideal, but it's a good thing individually for those pitchers as well as for evaluation purposes.

while I am not a "quick hook" guy but I hope CPM has a quicker one than last week end. it's a quality series and I would like to win it even if you have to pull a starter fairly quickly.

I think the team confidence is an issue here. the individual pitcher, if really struggling, can get over it in the future.

And the bullpen has been pretty damn good so far

Yeah, I've liked seeing relievers get extended outings. I like the idea of piggybacking starters by maybe having them only go through the order twice and then bringing in relievers to go through the line up one time each, potentially with a closer to finish up.

I get that, but in the first weekend of the season, the pitch count isn't there just to keep them below a certain amount of pitches, they're also trying to build up their stamina. So they had to leave guys in longer than they may during conference play, but they needed them to throw the pitches.

This makes way too much sense for the rant to comprehend.

Much of the rant doesn't understand baseball unfortunately. They don't understand that when you have a young team you are sometimes forced to go through struggles in order to benefit down the road.

It's the football mentality that there's no time for growth and you have to win every game to have a chance at the end.

You mean CPM shouldn't be fired for leaving Hess in too long during a ultimately meaningless game against ND?

Nor should he make drastic changes and put him back in the closer role after just one bad start?

I'm confused, because the rant told me otherwise.

Yep. And Gilbert, Hess, need to develop the Alex Lange mental toughness that says 'I have to pitch through this.'

Anything is possible in baseball, but we are severely handicapped right now. If we win a series in the next three weeks we will be very lucky. The cavalry is coming, though. My hope is to win one each weekend and win the mid-week games. If we can go 2-2 each week for the first four weeks we will come on after that, and we won't have to dig out of too deep a hole.
