Torn ACL back in the summer and didnt pitch at all in the fall. How much does a pitcher need his ACL? He's not cutting on a dime like a running back. ACL recovery times have shrunk significantly in the last 10 or so years for football players. I wonder if he will be rehabbed and ready for the middle or end of the season.

Do you watch baseball? Do you understand how much energy is produced from a pitchers lower body while throwing off a mound and how much their knees absorb when they extend their front leg towards the plate? They don't just stand there square with the plate and use all arms to throw.

Athletes can regularly run and sprint on an ACL just a few months post-surgery. But when it comes to putting high lateral strain on the knee, that's what takes time to build up. When I see a pitcher go through his motion (yes i watch baseball, crazy) I dont see a ton of side to side movement- mostly forward. So I am wondering if the recovery time for a non-lateral-movement-heavy athlete is less.

A knee is pretty important to a pitcher, both in throwing and in fielding his position. Johnson said in November that he was not expecting Sheerin back this season.

Ok less of a smartass answer here, when throwing off a rubber your weight will shift back and forward I would think that would put lateral pressure on the tendons of your knee. In the same unless you land perfectly every time landing on the slope of a mound with small changes each time would probably be very unstable and uncomfortable on someone with less than ideal stability in their knee. Could recovery time be somewhat short maybe but I would be worried a pitcher would try to compensate for their lower half and cause themselves an arm injury if brought back too soon.

I would think there is a lot of torque on the knee when pitching.

Assuming Guidry’s out, who starts today? Among the guys with experience who haven’t thrown a ton maybe Cowan or Benge? I don’t recall when they last appeared, maybe too soon.
