I have a pair of his NO Jazz socks. He gave them to me after a game in the dome. No documentation. But IDGAF. I know they were his.

Thanks for this post! Was too young to see him play at LSU. Found this article. Good read. He was amazing!

Also, Rick Hickman, LSU starting guard throughout Pete's entire career was from Aliquippa, if I remember correctly. Can't remember is his first name was Rich or Rick though!

Well, Meadowlark may have begged him to play but the fact is he wasn't the first white player invited to play for the globetrotters

L.A. TIMES ARCHIVES

FROM A TIMES STAFF WRITER
Bob Karstens, the third white player for the Harlem Globetrotters and the only one under a contract, who created many of their signature routines such as the pregame “Magic Circle,” has died. He was 89.

quote:

Abe Saperstein, founder of the Globetrotters and one of the other original white players, along with Buddy Levitt, saw Karstens play when the Globetrotters were matched against the Turner Gym team in Iowa. When Reece “Goose” Tatum was drafted into the Army Air Forces in 1942, Saperstein asked Karstens to step in as the team’s designated showman.

1942, 5 years before the Pistol was born.

I used to keep stats on the LSU bench during the Maravich era. When the
Globetrotters came to LSU they played in the Ag center, and the then owner of the Globetrotters Abe Saperstein stayed to see Pete play and he said " My God hes one of us".

I watched a documentary on Pistol Pete the other day and they did mention this in the show. He was actually invited to play with them and he turned it down.

long time but I think he got them from some team his dad coached before LSU, he thought they brought him luck(something sure did! ) always wore them at LSU, washed them after every game

ETA: knew a guy that owns a music store in Jupiter, Fl that went to LSU at the same time as Maravich, told me he used to give him guitar lessons, he has pics and memorabilia to prove it

he was the first person to tell me how Maravich used to drive his VW around campus while dribbling a basketball, and of course it was a stick
