Odd circumstances........ Wrong Way Bo

Some background.. Florida was primed for a big year in 1984 as was Auburn. LSU was in year one with Bill Arnsparger. Our first game was at Gainesville in what was the first Saturday morning SEC game of the Week on WTBS at the time.LSU and Florida tied,21-21.

The following week after Florida beat Tulane,63-21, the Gators feeling the heat from the NCAA fired Charley Pell as head coach and replaced him with Galen Hall as interim coach. The NCAA hit them with over 50 or so violations.

Meanwhile preseason #1 Auburn lost its first two games and Bo Jackson suffered a separated shoulder.Still, November rolled around and Auburn was 3-0 in the SEC (league played 6 SEC games until 1988), LSU was 3-0-1 and Florida was 3-0-1.Florida mauled Auburn 24-3 to go 4-0-1. LSU would beat Ole Miss and Alabama to also go 4-0-1.

On November 17th, Florida held off Kentucky, 25-17 and LSU lost at Miss State, 16-14. The Gators were tentatively SEC Champions at 5-0-1 while LSU was now 4-1-1.Also Auburn downed Georgia to increase its league record to 4-1-0.

The charges against Florida was so strong that the SEC and Florida worked out a deal where Florida would be 1984 SEC Champion, but ineligible for the Sugar Bowl berth (their title would be vacated the following May).

So the SEC would send the second place team to New Orleans for the Sugar.Auburn was 4-1-0 and LSU was 4-1-1. Meanwhile the following week LSU beat Tulane 33-15 in a game ended with :33 by a fight. An Auburn win over 4-6 Alabama and they go to the Sugar. An Alabama upset and LSU goes.

LSU should have been SEC champs that year. No reason why it was vacated if Florida was ineligible

My freshman year at LSU

Nebraska dominated us in that game.

I was in TGBFTL. That pregame was so loud, I couldn’t hear the drums while we marched. It was incredible.

1982 thru 1987 had some of my favorite players. Man those were some fun times. Remember being excited listening to LSU games on the radio with a LOT younger Jim Hawthorne on the play call. “This is the Southern States network, home of all LSU sports”.

That was probably the 1st year that I remember about LSU football. During that 21-21 game against Florida, I was only 7 years old but remember my dad jumping up from his chair and yelling 'Geaux Dalton Geaux'.

I went to the Sugar Bowl loss against Nebraska. Years later, I read an article in SI that talked about how that era of Nebraska football was heavily using steroids. Apparently their strength coach came over from Auburn and was known for experimenting both on himself and his players for the best way to utilize steroids and improve performance.

My dad was so excited, he bought some 84 Sugar Bowl commemorative drinking glasses. I still have them. Its crazy that we lost to Nebraska in two consecutive bowl appearances.
