IN the 60's and 70's there was little fan interest in college baseball. LSU wasn't that good. Probably had larger crowds for the high school tourney there than LSU games during that time.

This is a little before my time, but I went to an afternoon game with my dad in the early '80s. It was early in the season. I don't think there were 10 people there.

mostly the families and girlfriends of the players?
In the first few innings, the concession guy came to our seat in the stands and said that if we wanted anything, we had to get it then because he was closing. I know it was only a few innings into the game.
Not ten years later, the stands were packed and they were adding on.

We only needed to flash our student ID to the marshal to enter the game. Only a few hundred people attended most games.
It was so quiet during the games that we sometimes brought our books to read or study.
Smith/Lamabe era.

I started LSU in 1980 and baseball was not even a thought. Skip didn't arrive until 1984. I remember going to my first LSU baseball game (vs LA Tech) to see the San Diego Chicken. It's the only reason I went. Skip was "the wizard" relative to getting butts in seats.

I was a student from 69-74, don't ever remember hearing the words LSU baseball. who gave a rats arse about baseball when we had Bert Jones AND Pistol Pete.

there honestly wasn't too much to LSU baseball at all before Bertman became coach...it really is kind of suprising how much of an influence he had on not only our program, but college baseball in general...

I was in school in the early 80s, during the Lamabe years. We used to bring our books to the games because it was quieter at the Box than it was at the library. Attendance was usually <400.

I was there in '73 and '74 and baseball was nothing. No enthusiasum, no fans. I never went to a game, sorry, just basketball and football. I parked there for football games then.

The biggest story regarding the baseball program back then was when head baseball coach Jim Smith got promoted to equipment manager for the football team.
True story.

I was at a day time week day game. Yes, that was common back then. Typically about 100 people would be there.
Myself and another student worker went over to catch a few innings of a game instead of delivering mail. A friend of ours from high school was on the team and we sat by his mother. My friend, a female, starting talking about one of the players saying she heard he was a jerk. Our friend's mother nudged me and handed me a note. It said "be quiet, his father is right behind us"

"story" involves one Perry Russo, star witness of the Garrison trial. He was roomie with one of the players. Went around for months talking about how he had story he was selling to Life magazine. When it all hit the fan one evening on Walter Cronkite, we all got a call to get back to the clubhouse. The word was we should cut ties to Perry. Several guys were nervous because they'd "hung" with ol Per a bit much and knew the whole thing. That group usually stayed in right field during batting practice. Made better targets that way.
Footnote to the deal. After Russo got recognized nationally, his roomie got expelled. Seems he'd taken final for the roomie in those pre-i.d. days.

Was a student 78-82. Would go to an occasional day game and was usually less than 100 people there. You could sit anywhere you wanted. We'd sneak in beer in our jackets. Don't remember any game details

I attended LSU in '79, would ride my bike to the baseball games where you could show student ID and get in AT game time and sit 10 rows up right behind home plate. 25-50 people there. They would make you give foul balls back. Bertman was hired in '80 or so, things changed in a hurry. The promotions at the beginning of his tenure were awesome. Brought in the San Diego Chicken.

I started LSU in 1960. Attended many games at the Box - as others have said low attendance. The Tigers won the SEC in 61 or 62, but didn't go to a regional tournament because the Board of Supervisors were afraid they might play a team with African Americans on the roster.

I was on campus one day in the late 70's early 80's and I heard a ball being hit. I wandered around and heard it again. Finally I walked into the stadium and realized there was a game going on. I sat where I wanted and watched a couple of innings. No one was at the gate to take tickets. Maybe 20 -25 people in the stands if I remember correctly.

I can remember sitting at the media desk in the top row behind home plate. No one covering the game, no radio, etc.

There was a good article about the 1961 team in the paper last year.
Those uniforms look remarkably like the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates and this photo is reminiscent of Bill Mazeroski jumping on home plate after his game 7 walk off home run.
