Old Spice Classic - LSU v Butler (Sunday 1pm ESPNU)

though not quite as talented as the butler teams that reached back to back national finals, this team plays with similar toughness, aggression and belief (i suppose you would refer to this as the butler way)
so far, they are 5-1 on the season with wins over lamar, princeton, vanderbilt, ball state and washington state. their lone loss came to oklahoma state yesterday in orlando. they beat vandy in overtime and narrowly beat princeton and ball state. pulled away from wazzu late and their only comfortable win was over lamar.
they are led by kellen dunham and khyle marshall, both of whom scored 30+ against washington state on thursday. butler doesn't necessarily have a lot of size in terms of 'bigs' but as usual they make up for it with their tenacity, attention to detail and execution on defense.
offensively, they run similar stuff to what they did when brad stevens was their coach. they space the floor and run motion, set screens with their interior guys and play some 4 out 1 in.
the tigers should try and establish johnny o'bryant inside early and often. they like to hedge hard on those high screens so hickey should be in attack mode.
expect a ton of fouls and some frustrating moments. that's usually what comes with playing a team like butler early in the year on a neutral floor. they nearly overturned a 17 point deficit against ok state, so it is absolutely going to take 40 minutes of focus and execution of LSU is to prevail. hoepfully this is a game where our depth in numbers can help us out. butler uses about 8 guys regularly and occasionally expands their rotation to a 9th or 10th guy. im expecting a tight contest, but one in which the tigers find a way to win.
win the rebound battle, take care of the ball
, be patient, hit free throws, stay focused.
LSU 73
Butler 66

I was really impressed with butler when they played ohlahoma state. We are going to have to really play good to win this one.

We need this one badly. Gotta get some decent OOC wins because the SEC looks to be hot garbage once again.

Would be a black eye to only get one win in this tournament, we really need this one.
Butler looked great against OKIE LT. This game is going to show a lot about how this young team will bounce back.

We really do t-bird, as it looks like the SEC if following it's same formula of recent years and losing most meaningful OOC matchups.
Should we lose this one I can see the committe at the end of the year looking at our 3 best OOC and not coming through.
Need to play with some discipline and patience, pound the ball inside and not settle for so many jumpers.

Agreed.
Here are some things that IMO should be considered looking back at yesterday's loss.
LSU definitely could've beaten a ranked team yesterday (19th - USA today, 21st - AP)
:
They played a team with more experience in must-win tournament situations.
As a team, Memphis has 6 seniors who've been to NCAA 1st round twice & 2nd round once (last year).
A junior who has been in one 1st round & one 2nd round and 3 sophomores have been in one 2nd round.
Also their coach has post-season experience.
Pastner had been with Memphis since 2010 during which time his team reached the 2nd rd of NIT once, 1st rd NCAA twice and the 2nd rd NCAA once (last year).
They are used to having to play 2 games in 2 days in a strange environment. They know how to stay focused during the next day's game. They have been under the microscope on national TV for 3 games in 4 days before.
I think this really helped Memphis out yesterday.
Being in the OSC this weekend is great experience for our young team to learn how to win under pressure, 3 games over 4 days, with national attention on them (also knowing that NBA scouts are there).
Every game we play here will teach our young team as you say.
I say they come out tomorrow after a day of R&R wanting to make a statement!

True Britgirl, but their freshman big man played with poise and made some big plays in crunch time and our experienced bell cow counterpart had 10 turnovers and continued making some of the same mistakes he's been making since day one here.
He needs to get past that. He can be so good at times but he too often gets in his own way.

Absolutely, this is great for our team. But the reality is the moment is now. It seems curious to say how important this is, but given the big picture it is. We need a win and the great experince both.
I wish we would have scheduled one or two home games that could've helped us, but as we haven't tomorrow is pretty important.

This is almost a must win.
We can't go 0-for against all our decent OOC does and expect a bid.

It would be awesome to get the W tomorrow afternoon. I think we will win, just as long as we cut down on the number of turnovers that we committed last game.

Turnovers have been an issue all year. Part of it is because of the way we choose to play, but alot of of carlessness.
I know there are new pieces learning to play together, but need to be smarter.

this would be a good game to have martin make an impact. maybe get some minutes at the 4 because you know there will be lots of whistles, hope to keep mickey and johnny on the floor as much as possible.

Yeah, I'd like to see that too S. I know he hit some jumpers against St. Joe's but I just really don't think he's gonna give us his best contribution from the perimeter.

Thanks for the great write up S.
I'm really looking fwd to tomorrow's game!
I think a win against Butler will give us a lot of cred.
I know they're now with a 1st year coach, but a lot of the players have "been there". They have 2 players that went to the 10/11 Championship game, 7 players that went to the 11/12 championship game, and 9 players that went to the 2nd round last year. (They were ranked # 6 nationally last year).
Their new coach (Brandon Miller) is no stranger to post season play and important tournament games (assistant at Ohio St. From 08 - 11 and 2 Sweet 16's). So I'm not surprised they pushed OK St. on Thursday.
I was there to watch the game and was impressed by their effort and attitude.
Also, their current RPI ranking is 15th.
Would be a great win for us.
Go get 'em Tigers!
