Oh I totally agree, I'm just saying don't buy the BS that the AD spews about "budget cuts" and what not.

We just spent $7 million on video boards when the Dow was hovering around 9,000 like it is now ... they can handle $50k to send the pep band to Seattle.

quote:

Facilities that are receiving the improvements are the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the new Alex Box Stadium, the new Tiger Park softball stadium, the LSU Soccer Complex, the LSU Natatorium, Bernie Moore Track Stadium, Dub Robinson Tennis Stadium and Tiger Stadium. The package includes nearly a dozen new integrated video displays, each engineered with Daktronics’ light emitting diode (LED) technology.

I may be wrong, but I think most fans would rather the band be in Seattle than a new scoreboard for the Tennis Stadium.

Golfer did the math in the other thread...

quote:

Lets say they bring 50 people;

Flight $500 x 50 = $25,000
15 Hotel Rooms for 2 nights $240 (120/nt) x 15 = $3600
Bus transportation for the weekend = $5000
Food ($15/meal for 9 meals for 50) = $6750
Contingency: $5000
-----------------------------------------------

TOTAL: $45,350

$45,350/100 = Just 454 people at $100 to cover this by my estimates.

Because those of us spending money to go across country to support this university would like to have the normal game atmosphere.

Not to mention it just doesn't look good for LSU. If we can't afford as an Athletic Department to have a game in Washington, we should've scheduled a game in Dallas or Atlanta or Houston. That said, it's not a matter of "affording" it. We can afford it, they're just arbitrarily cutting something out that most of us would prefer not be cut out and they're using "budget cuts" and the recession as an excuse. It boils down to Alleva not understanding the things that are important to LSU fans in terms of the GameDay experience.

Schiefelbein: No recession in big-time college football
By JOSEPH SCHIEFELBEIN
Advocate sportswriter
Published: Apr 16, 2009 - Page: 1C

New defensive coordinator/linebackers coach John Chavis is making $450,000 per year with the LSU football program. The two new defensive assistants, Brick Haley and Ron Cooper, each pull in $200,000.

When these salaries were reported in The Advocate a few weeks ago, one angry reader e-mail, from an LSU alumnus and football fan, demanded more perspective.

Another reader e-mail, angered from the other side of the issue, demanded outrage, that those salaries “should boggle the minds of self-thinking, reasonable, people.”

Both have their points.

In a time when there are plenty of faculty and workers at LSU, as there are around this city and everywhere else, worrying about their jobs, seeing figures like these for assistant football coaches is eye-popping.

The goal here is to lend some perspective to a world of big-time college football that has its own set of standards.

With television contracts set into the future and booster clubs that chip in plenty of cash, it’s a world unto itself with its own guidelines for what is reasonable.

The simple facts, first.

LSU, as an athletic department, has the money. LSU, as an athletic department, can’t afford not to pay the money, because of how important football is to supporting its entire program. And this is the going rate for these specialists.

There is also an important distinction between the LSU that is the self-supporting athletic department structure that is, through its many revenue streams, paying for its coaches’ salaries, and the LSU that is the university itself cutting checks for deans and professors.

Same brand, same campus, different worlds.

Head coach Mike Archer’s first contract, in January 1987, paid him $125,000 per year ($85,000 base salary plus television-radio guarantees of $50,000). And in 1997, Gerry DiNardo was rewarded for resurrecting the program with a deal worth $480,000, plus a $20,000 bonus for getting to a bowl (which he did).

A little more than a decade later, and coordinators are commanding more than a head coach once did, while LSU head coach Les Miles makes more than $3.75 million per year.

As it is, Chavis’ replacement at Tennessee, Monte Kiffin, is making $1.2 million. Plus, the new defensive line coach at Tennessee, Ed Orgeron, is pulling in $650,000.

This illustrates another factor to college football’s wages. There is a cost for losing or not winning enough to satisfy fans — Chavis made $340,000 in his last of 14 seasons at Tennessee, and even that was a raise of $40,000 from the previous year — just as much as there is a cost for winning, with coaches demanding higher salaries or moving on.

Athletic departments fear the cost of losing more than the price of winning. Winning brings in money from alums, fills seats and lands TV deals. Losing doesn’t.

And so there is no recession in college football, not at this level, not now. There is only a steady inflation.

Let us know what you get back from them. I'm interested to see if this would work. I think 50k to get them there wouldn't be hard. Emails to all those who got Seattle tickets would be step 1.

Those games are scheduled years in advance, as you should well know. This budget cut just came up within the past year. Plus if we really couldn't afford it, we'd be playing at home vs. some rent-a-win.

I'd rather see the full band at an SEC road game personally.

the fact that this game was scheduled a long time ago is the reason i think this is BS. the band and arrangements for them should have been made long ago and this money should have already been set aside.

They have always been good about responding to various emails. They may not give us the response we want, but I'm sure they'll respond.

When you go to an away game, you get the other team's gameday atmosphere. You're not entitled to your own gameday experience because you put down a few hundred dollars to go across the country.

I'd much rather the LSUAD spend the money to send the FULL GBFTL to an SEC game (Alabama) than to waste it sending a few band members on what amounts to a paid vacation to the Pacific Northwest for a meaningless game against Washington. It would be totally inexcuseable and unacceptable to not send the full band to at least one SEC game......

So if we don't show up, we win??? I'm confused, why even play the game?

I'm guessing since its so meaningless, you'll be more than happy to refund the 10,000+ people expected to attend...

If each person who bought a ticket donates $5, the band can go.
