HCIW arrangements are doomed to fail, and only exist because Bobby Bowden refused to be put out to pasture. Let's not emulate one of the biggest trainwreck succession plans in CFB history, thanks.

Jimbo Fisher won a national championship. It was ugly the way it went down.

Let's not conflate FSU and Texas, baw.

Yeah, turn over a top 10 program to a guy who has never been a off or def coordinator much less a head coach.

Are you people fricking insane?

He was the worst head coach in the SEC like 8 years ago. He was a laughing stock at Ole Miss. The program was a dysfunctional disaster.

We are LSU, not Tulane. We don't hire projects as head coaches. We hire proven winners and program managers at the head coaching position.

I love Coach O as our DL coach and recruiting monster, but I am baffled by people who want him to be more than that. Is it because he inherited a system that he didn't sink at USC for half a year in the bullshite Pac-12 with a massive talent advantage?

I think what is remarkable about how many guys on this staff I would feel comfortable with as head coach should we ever need to have that happen. Darn good coaches on this staff.

He hasn't been terrible as a head coach considering the circumstances

WHAT!2?@?!?!?>!!#?@!

ETA:

He went 3-21 (10-25 overall in 3 years) in the SEC at Ole Miss and had NFL talent on his roster that Houston fricking Nutt took to a Cotton Bowl victory the very next year after Ed O went 3-9 (0-8 in SEC).

Again, great DL position coach and ELITE recruiter, but he is absofrickinglutely not LSU head coach material.

A. Your Greek is terrible

B. There is not a chance in hell that O will be the next coach of LSU.

USC would love to have kept him in hindsight

Actually, I don't think that is true and it's not because I think Coach O would not have been a better pick than Sarkisian (he sure would have and had already saved USC's season) but Coach O is simply "too rough around the edges" for all the elite associated with USC. Bad mistake on their part not to give him serious consideration the first time around. Sadly ironic how the Sarkisian decision has come back to burn their program when they had a more than capable guy already on the staff but he wasn't good enough for them. Here's to Coach O staying at LSU a long time!!

Our next head coach is either someone who's a hc at small D1 school and will cut their teeth going forward for the next few years or Jimbo.

This thread is dumber than the "intentionally get 3 and outs to practice punting" thread and people are fricking agreeing with it!

I am so glad you folks aren't in charge of our athletics

Don't let the titles fool you, Frank is basically Assistant Head Coach. He is by no means a typical position coach. Best case scenario for LSU is he is offered an HC job at a small school in the next couple years, does a great job, and returns as HC here.

Do you think he would jump if Tulane came calling?

position coach / coordinator is an ENTIRELY different skill set than head coach. Apples and oranges.

Coach O failed spectacularly as a head coach at Ole Miss. True, maybe he learned something in the meantime, but his head coaching history is terrible. Not sure I'd want that resume for our next head coach. We're an elite program in a recruiting hotbed with first-rate facilities. We should be able to land almost anybody we want.

On a broader note, I hate the whole "coach in waiting" concept. When the time comes, go out and get the very best guy available. Don't just name a guy and then wait years for him to take over. That's nonsense.

Les would want the opportunity to share victory for the next few years with his son who was offered a scholarship to LSU.

It's Frank. Coach O fits everything my friends at SCe are looking for age wise, experience wise and of course recruiting... He's high on their list but they are looking for someone a little younger... But I agree with the other guy.. Frank Wilson should be first in line. Time we had someone like him in the job and he's a loyal, great, guy with Recruiting steroids... You've never heard anyone anywhere say anything negative about him.... I hope Les lasts another 4 - 5 years then seamlessly turn it over to Frank.

LSU isn't going to hire the equivalent of Gene Chizik to take over its head coaching gig. I like O as much as anyone else, but defensive coordinator is about the ceiling for him here.

Also, HCIW is a disaster. None of them worked. Not even Jimbo's as it comrpomised Bowden's effectiveness. Muschamp left and was a dumpster fire anyway. Holgorsen pushed out Stewart. James Franklin left Maryland before taking over. The list goes on and on.

More importantly, the rules on recruiting for HCsIW are draconian. It basically handicaps your team. It basically doesn't happen since the rule change in 2010.

O has made it clear that he wants to be a head coach again someday. However, he is going to have to eat some humble pie at some point and be realistic. No power five conference team is going to take a shot on him as a head coach after what happened at Ole Miss. He is going to have to go coach a team in the American or Mountain West and prove himself before he gets to take that step.
