Most appropriate analogy I could think of.
Sorry if it rustled your Jimmy's.

The Rant is here for us fans to express our opinions...I get that.

All this emotional distress some seem unable to control over JH I don't get, but each to our own.

That's because the only things you can ever think of are personal attacks.

The sign of an inferior intellect. Can't handle the message, lash out at the messenger.

I brought it up jokingly in 2003 and he was pretty hot

I don't get mad about stuff that's that old, he's insecure and it's obvious, if he would quit being so damn prideful admit his mistakes and just be a little cheerful people would overlook his mistakes

I agree. The Hawthorne defenders all seem to become unhinged in these discussions.

That's because bringing up a screwed up call from 11 years ago is meaningless.

But bringing up a correct call from 17 years ago is evidence that he hasn't lost a step.

At least based on this thread.

Some folks couldn't keep up with a radio called game no matter who is calling it. Maybe that is the problem, for me he is Tigers Radio and I enjoy it. Beats the hell out of these canned boring an owners like TAm, Alabama, ( does that guy suck?)
Arkie is bad as well.

Doesn't impress me. I doubt he ever played. I don't need to be taught the game because I already know the game.

And many do complain about Jim's negativity but hanagriff does the same. He sounds like somebody ran over his dog when lsu isn't playing well but I guess he gets a pass since he isn't hawthorne

I thought it was pretty simpleton.

Maybe you should use some of your superior intellect to help you better follow the broadcast.

Hey, they aren't alone.

The OP seemed a tad "unhinged" to start the show.

For those complaining about the play by play call, I can totally understand botching a part of that. In my mind I think a lot of things are about to happen and then they don't. There was no good way to give a clear description of the Ibarra score after Vandy throwing to the ghost man covering first base. You are not watching on tv, so you just need to hear that Ibarra did finally score, and then it's Charlie's job, once the play is finished to describe what just happened. (actually Franques was doing color commentary this week)

I personally love how he announces with excitement when we are playing well and with obvious disgust when we aren't.

I have listened to enough PBP guys to know hawthorne is better than most. I also realize all PBP guys make mistakes.

The detractors usually have no basis to hate on Hawthorne other than he makes mistakes. As lsu fans they likely listen to lsu PBP more than 95% of the time...of course you will notice more mistakes by the guy you listen to the most.

Hawthorne is one of the few PBP guys that give a picture on the football field by calling out formations.

Basketball he is very good with knowing the opposing roster and calling the action as it happens.

I have heard 100x more great calls in baseball than bad ones. I listened to him in the 80's when regionals weren't televised and the A&M call is still a great moment for me.

I like Charlie H, I have met him mny times, he is one of the most knowledgeable sports people in BR. I think he needs a lot of work before he is a good PBP guy. But i would take a news reader from C-Span who gives the game reset every 3 minutes over "Mr. Color" Hawthorne.

I've turned on him after this weekend too. He's too damn cynical in baseball and basketball. He puts you in a bad mood just listening to him.

I was so much more happier watching the game instead of listening to the radio.

He's just awful to listen to.

Vandy rips one down the third base line and he screams fair ball, then after ten secs, he says foul.

Oh and "swing and a miss for a called strike 3."

That's the thing, it's like that all game long.

I feel like people supporting him are just supporting nostalgia because they grew up listening to his voice, but be really is very inaccurate and very mad.

Well you can indeed swing for a 3rd strike right??? What would it be called?? Strike 2??? No it's a 3rd strike, or what I guess you would want him to say a "strike out" which in fact is a 3rd strike.

I would also say that he calls a lot of close calls the way he sees it and then has to call what the Umps say... Thus that's why it's called close calls..

strike out

quote:

In baseball or softball, a strikeout or strike-out (denoted by K[1]) occurs when a batter is charged with three strikes during his time at bat. It is a type of out in most circumstances. A strikeout is a statistic recorded for both pitchers and batters.
