Based off of the team’s need to get QB’s, did Lane sign two additional guys from the portal as a backup plan in case we missed out on Leavitt? Or did he sign some quality backups in case Leavitt doesn’t pan out? Just curious as to what you who are in the know, think about signing three guys out of the portal.

I’ve felt that the reason that we tried for other prospects like Sorsby and Williams. was the unknowns concerning Leavitt’s recovery from injury. The pursuit of the backups was simply building the future Qb room, as well as backup plans if Sam was not healthy.

LSU had nothing at the QB position. Nussmeier was out of eligibility. Van Buren left as did Hurley (perhaps Lane didn't prioritize them anyway). LSU didn't just need one QB. They needed multiple. Lane did the same thing last season at Ole Miss. Austin Simmons was the presumed starter after serving as Dart's backup for 2 seasons. However, Kiffin also signed Chambliss and a couple of "project" QBs from Oklahoma St and Rice.


The goal was to get an experienced starter at QB...and he did. But he signed an experienced D2 starter (Clark) similar to Chambliss and a "project" in Longstreet. The only difference is timing and/or LSU's increased resources allowed the "project" to be a highly rated prospect out of HS.
