They aren't even asking for payment from the school. They are asking to be able to appear in commercials and sell their likeness instead of the NCAA being able to do so.

Completely reasonable. Regular students can do it

They may not be asking for any payments yet, but when a union gets its foot in the door, right or wrong, all options are open. Expect $$$ to become a major factor if this ever goes through. One thing they are demanding, at least according to ESPN, is the right to transfer any time they want.Just think of the consequences of that.I still want to see them pay both Federal & state income taxes like we real employees have to do.I also want to see how much they have to pay for their health plan.

I doubt they would make enough for that to even be a real issue

That undermines the very product that is being sold. NCAA is rightfully protecting the product.

Can students appear in commercials and receive endorsements?

Yes.

It is ridiculous for players to be stopped from cashing in on themselves, separate from the university

so the NCAA is a business and the players are employees? the ruling agrees

Sure...but those students aren't eligible to play in the NCAA.

They can cash in whenever they want...they just will lose eligibility to play when they do.

That's a false equivalency and a very lazy argument.

The NCAA is a collection of universities and their athletic departments that offer a product for sale. That product pays for the athletic department (in most places only in part). Sometimes, as in LSU's case, the athletic departments return money back to the university.

The NCAA has rules regarding eligibility. They are meant to protect the product. Anyone with half a brain can see the issues involved with allowing players to sign endorsement deals. It's basically the equivalent of allowing teams to pay for recruits.

Student athletes can appear in commercials and receive endorsements, just like regular students can. Unfortunately, in doing so, they lose their amateur status, thus disqualifying them to compete in their respective sport at the collegiate level. I'm sure there are students doing research that agree to abstain from taking endorsement money from certain entities that conflict with the goals of the research.

nothing is stopping them from doing this....
